Eloi Noel Beraud (as he was christened) was born on December 26, 1875 in Saint-Étienne. The civil status declared "Éloi-Noël Isodore Béraud born of unknown parents". In 1885, the public assistance sent him to a host family in Toul where he remained until February 10, 1894.
Back in Saint-Etienne, he attended the Beaux Arts courses where he began copying the old Masters. On August 4, 1900, he married Marie Luce in Puy, his son Georges-Noël was born on December 25, 1912. Eloi Noel Beraud's style developed and he began to paint beautiful scenes with Barbizon accents as well as many scenes typical of the Art Nouveau period that he signed N. Béraud or sometimes Pelletier.
At that time, he frequently used watercolor and gouache, techniques he abandoned in the late 1920's. He moved to Paris in January 1901 at 45 rue Boulard. The following year he illustrated a whole series of postcards for British industry. The success of these cards lasted until the end of the 1910's and contributed greatly to his reputation In England. After the war, he returned to Paris.
In 1919, he found work by creating models and advertising posters for Galeries Lafayette. In 1924, he moved to a large house, Place Le Vacher in Ecouen (Val-d'Oise), where he set up his workshop. He worked in his atelier tirelesly from 7am until 8pm.
In April 1930 he set off to discover Venice. The effect is instantaneous, the beauty of the site subdued him and from thenceforth he dedicated his life to painting only Venice. In May of 1930 he met Rubens Santoro (1859-1942). At that time he was at the peak of his glory he showed Eloi the special light of the City of the Doges, the sparkling and so impressionistic reflections of the water flowing between the canals, all the variations of brown, ochre, white or brown that formed the tones of the facades of the Venetian houses. For nearly two months, the men never leave each others sides. Eloi found his Master.
On his return from Venice, Eloi went through Nice to present his barely dry paintings to Morscio, a gallerist of Italian origin. The latter, enthusiastic, immediately signed a contract. Whilst he had found great success with his previous works that were signed Béraud, Pelletier or Luda, Morscio had the idea of a pseudonym more commercial and Italian-sounding, Marc Aldine. This signature was to become one of the two pseudonym he now put on all his paintings until the end of his career.
His second pseudonym appeared at the end of the 1930s, at the request of the English gallery Whitgift Galleries who, to distinguish his orders from those of Morscio, decides that he will sign Bouvard, a French name that pleased the British market. From the beginning of his collaboration with Morscio and Whitgift Galleries, and until the end of his career, Eloi-Noël now only painted views of Venice signed Marc Aldine or Bouvard.
Along with his own career, Éloi trained his son Georges from 1932. He lavished his advice and revealed his tricks and techniques. In 1941, at the birth of George's daughter, he and Eloi worked together, and in the spirit of the Master George succeeded him. Eloi died on February 9, 1957 at the age of 82 in the family home.

Antoine Bouvard Snr.
Bouvard Antoine ( Aldine Marc ) was born at Saint-Jean-de-Bournay in L’Isere in 1870. He originally trained as an architect and studied art and architecture under Constance-Dufeus, at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. He became the Director of Architectural Services for the Seine and was responsible for the construction of the Bourse du Travail and also for the Boulevard Morland in Paris. On one of his numerous painting trips to Venice he met the noted Venetian artist Felix Ziem. From that moment this artist greatly influenced his work for the remainder of his life. Painter’s love of Venice you can see in the delicacy and fluidity of his use of colour. As a master he succeeds to capture the warmth and beauty that he found in in the capital of northern Italy. Antione Bouvard is also known under the pseudonym of Marc Aldine, allowing him further success through alternative markets for his work. His works are delicately but confidently painted, capturing all the charm of one of the most romantic cities in the world. This artist became very popular because of his sensitive understanding of Venice. He demonstrates his architectural skill and Venice’s unique colour and light effects. He does capture the daily life and glamour of well-known scenes like the Grand Canal and the Santa Maria Della Salute and also by catching the atmosphere and serenity of the backwaters. Venice had always been a popular venue for visitors on the ‘Grand Tour’ throughout the 18th and 19th century. The city attracted visitors in greater numbers with the development of the European Rail Network in the second part of the 19th century. During his lifetime he exhibited throughout France and Italy as well as many provincial European Galleries. The painter’s works are internationally collected and have achieved great popularity and recognition in this present time. He is one of the most prolific painters of Venetian genre.

He first exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1865 with a Landscape at Villiers-sur-Seine which brought him a certain amount of recognition. He was a regular exhibitor at the Salon des Artistes Français. Obtaining a third-place medal in 1879, and a second-place medal and a gold medal in 1889 at the Exposition Universelle in Paris. He was decorated with the Légion d'Honneur in 1898.
Born in Austria to French parents who served the exiled French Bourbon royal family, Luigi Aloys-François-Joseph Loir moved with his family and the Bourbons to the Duchy of Parma in 1847. In 1860 his family returned to Paris following the expulsion of the Bourbons from Parma. But Luigi remained in the city, having enrolled, at the young age of eight, at the Accademia de Belle Arti. He eventually rejoined his family in Paris in 1863. There he studied with the decorative painter and set designer Jean Pastelot, making his Salon debut in 1865. Loir painted mainly views of Paris, in all seasons and at different times of the day or night.
Loir was the Paris painter par excellence, capturing and expressing all aspects of the life of the city at all hours of the day and night. He may be criticised for excessive attention to the process, but his invaluable powers of observation are undeniable. Apart from those of his canvases which are in museum collections, his best-known works include: Preparations for the Fun Fair (acquired for the Salle d...
