Arthur Parton was born on March 26, 1842, in Hudson, New York. He attended the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, where he studied under William Trost Richards. With a solid foundation in the technical elements of his craft, Richards had a lasting impact on him.
Parton is recognized as a painter of the Hudson River School, particularly noted for his depictions of river and mountain scenery. His debut exhibition took place in Philadelphia in 1862. In 1865, he made New York City his home and quickly became a prominent figure in its artistic community. He was named an Associate Member of the National Academy of Design in 1871 and achieved Academician status in 1884. For over fifty years, he consistently displayed his work at the Academy. In 1886, he was awarded the Gold Medal by the American Art Association and received the Temple Medal from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia. Additionally, he won a competitive award at the 1900 Paris Exposition and the St. Louis Exposition in 1904.
In 1869, Parton traveled to Europe for a year, where he was inspired by the Barbizon painters. The pieces that gained him recognition include: On the Road to Mt. Marcy (1873, location unknown), A Mountain Brook (1874, location unknown), and Evening, Harlem River (1887, location unknown). His works Loch Lomond and Solitude garnered significant acclaim at the 1876 Centennial Exposition and helped establish his national reputation. The New York Post remarked that “Mr. Parton’s work would stand out as distinctly American in any foreign collection of paintings. ”
Together with his brother Ernest, Arthur Parton played a key role in the Hudson River School, adhering to the naturalistic style. His time in Europe in 1869 shaped his technique, leading to the creation of pastoral landscapes characterized by softer brushwork and a strong focus on tonal variations.
Parton created art across the Catskills and Adirondack Mountains, as well as along the Shenandoah, Hudson, and other regional rivers. He was affiliated with the American National Academy, American Water Color Society, Artist's Fund Society, and the National Academy of Design Public. His works are housed in prestigious institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the Newark Museum, the Hudson River Museum, the High Museum of Art, and the Washington County Museum of Art. He passed away in 1914 at the age of 71.

He was born in Hudson, New York and enrolled in The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts as a student of William Trost Richards, who remained a strong influence. In 1862, his first exhibitions were in Philadelphia. In 1864, he moved to New York City where he exhibited regularly with the National Academy of Design excepting 1869 when he spent a year in Europe and was influenced by the Barbizon style of painting.
