About the Item

This intimate oil painting presents a stylized winter landscape rendered in soft pastel tones. Snow-covered trees stand in tranquil silence along the banks of a frozen river, their forms reflected faintly in the ice. In the foreground, a small wooden boat lies moored at the river’s edge, contributing to the scene’s serene, contemplative mood. Percy’s delicate handling of light and color – a pale sunlit sky against subtle blues and violets of snow imbues the work with a poetic calm. The atmosphere and decorative simplification of the composition are strongly reminiscent of Gustaf Fjaestad’s celebrated Nordic winter scenes, capturing what contemporaries described as the silent, majestic beauty of Swedish winters with an almost mystical tranquility. In its quiet harmony and refined palette, the painting echoes Fjaestad’s approach to portraying winter “ruled by a pure and quiet spirit,” while remaining distinctly Percy’s own vision of nature’s repose. Arthur Percy was a Swedish painter and designer whose artistic development bridged academic training and modernist influences. He studied at the Konstnärsförbundets (Artists’ Association) school in Stockholm under prominent artists Richard Bergh and Eugène Jansson, absorbing both the national romantic ethos and early modern trends. In 1908 Percy traveled to Paris with fellow young Swedish artists, immersing himself in the vibrant avant-garde scene. There he encountered the work of Matisse, Gauguin, Braque, and Picasso, and found particular inspiration in the late paintings of Cézanne. Upon returning, he became an integral member of De Unga (“The Young Ones”), a progressive group whose 1909 exhibition in Stockholm marked a turning point toward Swedish modernism. These formative experiences honed Percy’s artistic language, infusing his painting with both a French modernist sensibility and a deep reverence for Swedish landscape traditions. Throughout his early career he produced portraits (especially of children), floral still lifes, and landscapes from regions like Bohuslän and the Stockholm archipelago, developing a versatility in subject matter alongside his evolving style. In the ensuing decades, Percy balanced his fine-art pursuits with a prominent career in design. In 1923 he was appointed artistic director of the Gefle Porcelain Factory, where he introduced elegant new ceramic forms and glazes; he later also designed glassware for the Gullaskruf glassworks. His clean, functionalist aesthetic in these applied arts roles was very much in line with the Scandinavian ethos of simplicity and utility, and several of his ceramic patterns (such as Tre blommor and Exotica) became widely popular. Despite these accomplishments in design, Percy always regarded himself “first and foremost a painter,” devoting the majority of his life to the pursuit of fine art. After World War II, he settled year-round in his native village of Vickleby on the island of Öland, where he co-founded the local artists’ colony known as the Vicklebyskolan (“Painters at Bo”) and drew endless inspiration from the island’s landscapes. The Öland scenery – its expansive skies and changing seasons – fueled a prolific late period in Percy’s painting, and he continued to paint evocative landscapes up until his death in 1976. Today, Arthur Percy’s artwork is held in numerous public collections, including the Nationalmuseum and Moderna Museet in Stockholm – as well as in regional art museums in Gothenburg, Norrköping, Kalmar and other cities. A Winter Landscape by Swedish Artist Rikard Lindström
Located in Stockholm, SE
Depicting a winter wonderland, this piece mesmerizes the viewer with its turquoise sky - a bold and unique choice that draws the eyes upwards. But the narrative is more profound. Set against this sky is a distant, rugged stone hill, standing as a testament to the timeless beauty of nature. A few trees benethe the hill, gracefully blanketed with snow. The snow itself is no ordinary white, but a mix of pink and blue shimmers, giving the piece a more interesting quality. More intriguing are the tracks left in the snow. Whose might they be? An animal, perhaps? Or did the artist himself tread this frozen landscape, leaving behind a subtle signature? Such is the mystery of Lindström's work. Rikard Magnus Lindström (1882-1943) was not just a painter but a storyteller, deeply rooted in his Swedish heritage. He's best known for his paintings of archipelago scenes, where the tranquil and tempestuous moods of the sea often play central characters. Born in Stockholm, Lindström's journey into the art world began at the Konstakademien in Stockholm, and his passion took him to Copenhagen and Paris. Throughout his life, Lindström's restless spirit saw him wander, capturing the diverse landscapes of Stockholm's archipelago, Västkusten, Åland, and notably, Lofoten. His affinity for portraying the vast expanse of the sea, often with sailing vessels in the backdrop, is legendary. Lindström's colors were described as "powerful yet harmonious," and this piece is no exception. The juxtaposition of the turquoise sky with the shimmering snow showcases his masterful play with colors. A member of the younger generation of the Konstnärsförbundet, Lindström was greatly influenced by the older members, particularly by Karl Nordström's national-romantic paintings. Besides painting, Lindström had a flair for writing and was a popular contributor to Dagens Nyheter, often penning articles and notes in Morgonbris. However, beneath the vivacious, nature-loving exterior was a man of depth and complexity, as his ex-wife, Martha Rydell-Lindström, has depicted in her book. He was a lover of life, but his nature held layers of vulnerability and tenderness. Today, this winter landscape stands as a tribute not just to Lindström's artistic genius but to the very essence of the man himself. Embrace the opportunity to own a piece of Swedish art history, painted by an artist whose legacy continues to inspire. Rikard Lindströms paintings...
