About the Item

This is an original gouache painting layered on an original inkjet print using alternative process photography. Image measures 8" x 8" on 11" x 8.5" paper. Ava Blitz uses digital technology as an experimental tool, the camera and the computer serving as a painterly and draftsman’s/printmakers instrument. Digital artifacts, halos, blurs, and pixels, considered to be mistakes, are used as part of Blitz's language. She often paints or draws into these images, creating a layering of process. The images recall conventions found in Eastern and Western imagery, from classical to popular culture. Each one takes its own intuitive path to completion, resulting in a new magical reality. This piece will be signed, titled, and dated on the front or back according to buyer's specifications. Ava Blitz is a visual artist who currently divides her time between studio work in sculpture, works on paper, photography, and public art. Blitz's public works and commissions are many, including installations at the Philadelphia International Airport and the University City Science Center, created under Philadelphia’s 1% for Art Programs, and as far away as Tokyo, Japan. Ava Blitz served on an International Sculpture Symposium panel in Japan, and has lectured on public art for the American Institute of Architects, the Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation, and the Michener Art Museum. She has been the recipient of numerous honors, awards, and fellowships, many of which have funded her public art projects. These include grants from the Japan Foundation, the Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation, the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, the Leeway Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation, and the Jerome Foundation. Blitz has shown locally at the Michener Art Museum, the Delaware Center for Contemporary Arts, the Philadelphia Art Alliance, Grounds for Sculpture, the Noyes Museum, and the Allentown Art Museum. From 1986 to 1998 she taught at Bryn Mawr College, where she directed the fine art department.

Real Fire: abstract painting w/ spray paint graffiti tag in red & black
By Mat Tomezsko
Located in Bryn Mawr, PA
Mat Tomezko's latest series of mixed media paintings uses evocative materials and imagery of fire, flowers, food, newspapers, asphalt, and ash to illuminate the interconnectedness of destructive and creative forces. "Real Fire" depicts flames and fire above a segment of abstract forms in spray paint recalling street art and graffiti tags. This painting is signed and dated on the back. It includes all hanging hardware and is ready to install -- no need for additional framing. Tomezsko is an artist from Philadelphia who creates abstract paintings, public art installations, and community art projects based around participation and everyday visual language. His approach to composition is informed by mid-century formalism and conceptualism. His work was recognized by the 2017 Americans for the Arts Public Art Network Year in Review for outstanding public art. Tomezsko’s work has been exhibited at numerous art spaces regionally and nationally, including the Crane Arts, Woodmere Art Museum, the Center For Emerging Visual Artists (CFEVA), and Wexler Gallery in Philadelphia; Lillstreet Art Center in Chicago, IL; the Delaware Contemporary in Wilmington, DE; and Thomas Hunter Projects in New York, NY. He has created several notable public art projects including "14 Movements: A Symphony in Color and Words," a mile-long temporary mural installed in downtown Philadelphia during the 2016 Democratic National Convention; "Look Long and Look Good," a series of 30 paintings currently installed along Main Street in Manayunk; and "Flowering Axes," a mural in the 5th Street Vehicular Tunnel underneath the Ben Franklin Bridge. His work is in the collection of The Wharton...
