About the Item

This evocative evening view of Visby by Axel Lindman captures Visby in the warm, fading light of the setting sun. Rendered with atmospheric sensitivity, the silhouette of Visby’s medieval skyline—its church towers and city walls—emerges softly through a hazy glow. The path in the foreground, leading the viewer's eye toward the distant city, invites a contemplative gaze into the past. Lindman painted a nearly identical composition in daylight the same year, 1896. That version was sold at Stockholms Auktionsverk on December 4, 1995 (lot 107). About the Artist Axel Lindman was born in Öregrund in 1848 and studied at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts from 1872 to 1875, followed by several formative years in France and Italy. He became a member of the Academy in 1897 and exhibited with both the Opponenterna and the Konstnärsförbundet. Early in his career, Lindman was known for refined studies of rural France and for intimate coastal and garden scenes from Gotland. After settling in Stockholm, he turned his attention to cityscapes and the surrounding landscapes, developing a lyrical, light-infused style. Lindman’s work is held in several major Swedish collections, including the Nationalmuseum, the Gothenburg Museum of Art, the Norrköping Art Museum, and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. About the Setting Visby, the medieval town on the island of Gotland, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its remarkably preserved city wall and Gothic church ruins. Long a source of inspiration for Swedish artists, the town's historical ambiance and unique light conditions have drawn painters since the 19th century. Lindman's interpretation of Visby stands out for its mood of quiet solemnity and the poetic play of light and shadow. oil on canvas 35 x 28 cm (13 3/4 x 11 in) 45.5 x 38.5 cm (17 7/8 x 15 1/8 in) Provenance: The artist’s estate. An Autumn Evening Study, 1901 (En höstkvällstudie, 1901)
By Fritz Lindström
Located in Stockholm, SE
This landscape painting by Swedish artist Fritz Lindström captures the tranquility of the Stockholm archipelago. "An Autumn Evening Study, 1901" is a stunning portrayal of a rural scene at dusk. The painting's delicate pink and purple sky envelops the landscape in a soft glow, hinting at the transition from day to night. In the middle ground, a farmer with his horse can be seen plowing a field, adding a narrative element to this peaceful scene. This work is one of several paintings Lindström created during this period, following his time in France and prior to joining the Rackstad group in 1903. BIOGRAPHY Fritz Lindström started his artistic journey as an apprentice in decorative painting under Carl Grabow, where he met fellow artist Björn Ahlgrensson. He later studied at the Artists' Association School in Stockholm with Richard Bergh (1892–1894 and 1895–1896) and at Valand Art School in Gothenburg under Carl Larsson (1894–1895). His studies continued in Copenhagen and Paris from 1897 to 1899. In 1900, Lindström returned to Sweden, drawn to Värmland by his friend and brother-in-law Björn Ahlgrensson. From 1903 onwards, he became part of the Rackstad group—a community of artists who saw the countryside as an ideal setting for artistic and spiritual work. This belief resonated with Lindström, and he remained dedicated to this lifestyle for over fifty years, living and working by Lake Racken. Lindström's early artistic focus was on the challenging art of human studies, which piqued his interest. Despite financial struggles and difficulty selling his paintings, he gained recognition mainly for his portraits, known for their well-constructed composition and deep psychological insight. Portrait painting became crucial for his financial stability. Interest in his landscape paintings grew when the director of the National Museum happened upon his landscapes during an exhibition opening...

After Sunset by the Lake, 1889 by Swedish Artist Anton Genberg, 1889
Located in Stockholm, SE
Among the treasured classic arts we offer for sale is this stunning painting by the artist Anton Genberg. Born in 1862 to Pehr Jonsson and Anna Genberg, he left an indelible mark on the art world through his magnificent creations. Genberg's life was colored with a passion for exploration, study, and artistic expression. His artistic journey began with studies at the Tekniska skolan in Stockholm from 1882 to 1884, during which he also honed his skills at Oscar Törnås' private painting school. He furthered his education under the tutelage of Per Daniel Holm at the prestigious Konstakademien from 1884 to 1889. During these years, Genberg's exceptional talent was recognized with numerous scholarships and medals. Our painting, dated 1889, transports us to a captivating scene just some minutes after sunset. The canvas is imbued with a beautiful golden glow as the sun's last rays kiss the sky. Amidst a serene lake, the heavenly light reflects, painting the water's surface with mesmerizing shades of purple. In the distance, the landscape is dominated by a mountainous forest, while in the foreground, a stretch of land adorned with bushes creates a sense of depth. The impressionist style comes alive through Genberg's swift brushstrokes, reminiscent of the masterful techniques employed by Rembrandt, with branches delicately etched using the opposite end of the brush. Genberg's fame as a landscape artist was solidified through his enchanting depictions of snow-laden landscapes from Norrland, particularly the majestic "fjällen" (mountains). His art also captured the allure of Stockholm, Dalarna, and his birthplace in Jämtland. Notably, his masterpiece "Vinterafton" earned him a place of honor at the esteemed Nationalmuseum. Beyond his creative pursuits, Anton Genberg was actively involved in the art community. He served as the vice-chairman of the Svenska konstnärernas förening from 1913 to 1918 and held a position on the board of Sveriges allmänna konstförening from 1906 to 1939. His exceptional contributions were recognized when he was elected as a member of the Konstakademien in 1922. Throughout his life, Genberg resided in various places, leaving behind a trail of artistic inspiration. From 1916 to 1924, he lived in the enchanting Villa Wallbeck-Hansen, a masterpiece of national romanticism...

" Summer Evening Southwest Texas " 1909 Texas Hill Country Julian Onderdonk
By Julian Onderdonk
Located in San Antonio, TX
Julian Onderdonk "Summer Evening S. W. Texas" Texas Hill Country (1882 - 1922) San Antonio Artist Image Size: 9 x 12 Frame Size: 15 x 18 Medium: Oil on panel Dated 1909 "Summer Evening S. W. Texas" "A Texas Painter Worked Under the Radar in New York," By Eve M. Kahn, March 6, 2014, The New York Times Onderdonk, a San Antonio native who died of an intestinal ailment in 1922, at 40, is best known for painting swaths of Texas bluebonnets. Those canvases can bring more than $500,000 each, while his New York scenes usually end up in the five-figure range. Onderdonk’s parents were painters in San Antonio, and in 1901, when he was a teenager, they sent him to New York for training. Through 1909, he lived in various Manhattan apartments and Staten Island houses. He then returned to Texas, but continued to spend months at a time in New York. In 1902 he had married a Manhattan teenage neighbor, Gertrude Shipman. While she focused on raising their daughter, Adrienne, and worrying about their strained finances, “he created more than 600 works of art, often producing a painting or two a day,” Eyewitnesses recorded his prolific pace in New York, but Onderdonk works bearing those dates rarely turn up. The puzzling gap in his productivity is explained in family correspondence that the Bakers uncovered: The artist admits that he was signing pieces with pseudonyms. He mostly used Chas. Turner and Chase Turner and occasionally resorted to Elbert H. Turner and Roberto Vasquez. Julian Onderdonk was the son of the important Texas landscapist, Robert Onderdonk. He was the father's pupil at age 16. Sponsored by a Texas patron, he studied at the Art Students League in New York when he was 19, the pupil of Kenyon Cox, Frank DuMond, and Robert Henri. He also studied with William Merritt Chase on Long Island. In 1902, having lost his Texas patron because he married, he asked $18 for 12 paintings at a Fifth Avenue dealer in New...
