About the Item

This large painting called 'The mountain of clouds' by Barnard Brooke has a very peaceful and almost dreamlike scenery with a mountain surmounted by light misty clouds. A pair of very large eagles pass by in the distance. In the background, a large white cloud, lit up by the early morning sun, is towering up over the mountains. The scenery or inspiration is possibly taken from the Scottish Highlands. Rooke was born in 1859 and lived in Sittingbourne, Kent. He is a rare artist and not much is known but he exhibited in London, Royal Academy of Arts, in 1885 and 1888. Rooke was an accomplished painter of portraits and genre subjects. His other titles at the Royal Academy include ´Carmen´, 'Waiting', 'Early Roses', and 'A Follower of The Mahdi'. This painting was probably painted in the 1880´s. The largest eagles in the UK and Scotland is the white-tailed eagle and the golden eagle. The white-tailed, sometimes also called sea eagle, has a wingspan of up to 8 feet and the golden eagle can reach up to 7 feet. The white-tailed eagle was extinct in the early 20th century due to illegal killing. In the 1970´s they were reintroduced in Scotland and on the Isle of Wight in 2019. The golden eagle was also more or less extinct and has also been reintroduced. The golden eagle tend to have large home territories, with eyries built on rocky cliff faces or in trees. Golden eagles have an average lifespan of 23 years, and tend to pair for life. The eagles painted in this painting could with some imagination, perhaps be a pair of golden eagles living on ´The Mountain of clouds´ Regardless of whether it is true or not, it is a very beautiful picture.
