Benjamin Williams Leader'Wading in the River' 19th century landscape painting of figures, greenery
About the Item
'Wading in the River' by Benjamin Williams Leader. A 19th century landscape painting of figures and baby wading in a river. Surrounded by lush greenery. This highly detailed painting by this notorious 19th century artist is a brilliant example of his work and one that would look amazing in any collection.
Benjamin Williams Leader (1831-1923) was one of the most successful and prolific British landscape painters of the latter half of the 19th century. He began to exhibit at the Royal Academy in 1857, and continued until 1922. Leader concentrated on landscape scenes in the Midlands, Scotland and, in particular, North Wales. In a memoir he explained that his 'favourite subjects have always been home scenes - the banks of the Severn or the Thames, the outskirts of a village, commons bordered with whitewashed cottages reflected in reedy pools, the pine woods of Surrey, and the streams and wooded hills of North Wales. Wales has ever had great attractions for me, and many pictures have I painted of Bettws-y-Coed and Capel Curig.'

Benjamin Williams Leader
Benjamin Williams Leader entered the Royal Academy Schools from 1856 and exhibited his first painting at the summer exhibition the following year. Leader would go on to become one of the most celebrated landscape artists of the Victorian age and at the height of his fame his paintings commanded the highest prices of any British artist. He exhibited at the Royal Academy every year from 1857 to 1922, an unbroken 65 continuous years, which still stands as a record today. Benjamin Williams Leader was elected as an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1883, and an Academician in 1898. He also exhibited abroad, winning a gold medal at the Paris Salon and awarded the Legion of Honour in 1889. Examples of Leader’s work can be seen in Birmingham and Manchester Art Galleries, and the Victoria and Albert Museum and Tate Gallery in London.

- 'Trouville Sur Mer' French Landscape beach scene with figures, sea and beach hutBy Marcel DyfLocated in Shrewsbury, Shropshire'Trouville Sur Mer' is a gloriously warm painting of late summer in Trouville, France. To watch Dyf paint was entrancing. Even as an old man, he would stand rather than sit before the easel, working with extraordinary vigour and intense concentration. His palette was a rainbow of fresh colours and his hand continually darted back and forth from the canvas. At intervals he would step back or consider briefly another picture before returning to the easel, his eye refreshed. Usually he sketched straight onto the canvas, which he set up on his travelling easel...Category
