About the Item
Bernard Corey gained national recognition for his beautifully rendered landscapes paintings of the New England countryside and shore. Even in his early eighties, the artist rarely missed a day of painting on location, in the great outdoors. If the snow was flying and temperatures were sub-freezing, Corey would merely add another layer of clothing and keep on painting. The artist’s strong sense of design, combined with his subtle yet masterful use of color, earned Corey more than ninety-three awards for his paintings, including seven gold medals. His quiet, gentle nature and quick sense of humor are often reflected in his peaceful, luminous landscapes of rural farms and sheltered coves. During his lengthy career, Corey earned membership in the Allied Artists of America, Salmagundi Club, Guild of Boston Artists, Hudson Valley Art Association, North Shore Art Association, and the Academic Artists Society.

Bernard Corey
Bernard Corey (1914-2000), known for his delicate New England landscapes, is considered one of the premier New England plein air artists of the twentieth century. He was born on September 3, 1914, in Grafton, Massachusetts, and he lived his life in the house that his grandfather built in South Grafton. In the early 1960s, he made the decision to dedicate his life to being an artist. He moved to Rockport for a short time to hone his skills and quickly established himself as a professional painter. Corey always drew his inspiration from nature. He felt that it was necessary to paint directly from the source as opposed to working in the studio or from photographs, and painted a variety of subject matter, in oils and watercolors, on location throughout New England. He was a member of The Allied Artists Society, The Salmagundi Club of New York City, The Guild of Boston Artists, The Hudson Valley (NY) Art Association, The North Shore Art Association, The Academic Artists Society, The American Artists Professional League, The American Watercolor Society, and The Rockport Art Association.

Winter Scene

In this prototypical oil painting, Walter Launt Palmer's title as "the painter of the American winter" can be vividly and brilliantly seen. As an impressionist painter that emerged at the turn of the 20th century, Palmer took great interest in the picturesque American landscape, though he particularly focused on the rendering of this landscape glistening with snow. His pictures evoke an unreplicable natural serenity, and in this oil painting "The Winter Scene...

Harry Leith-Ross (1886 - 1973)
The son of an English father and a Dutch mother, Harry Leith-Ross was born in the British Colony of Mauritius, an island in the Indian Ocean a thousand miles off the southeast coast of Africa. His first formal art instruction began in England under Stanhope Forbes, followed by studies with Jean Paul Laurens at the Academie Julian in Paris. Leith-Ross came to the United States to enroll at the National Academy of Design in New York City in 1910, and then to Woodstock, in 1913. It was in Woodstock at the Art Students League, under the tutelage of Birge Harrison and John F. Carlson, that Leith-Ross would receive the training that most influenced his career as an artist.
There he formed a lifelong friendship with fellow artist, John Folinsbee. The two artists shared a studio during this time and participated in several joint exhibitions exclusively featuring their work, including an exhibit at the Louis Katz...
