About the Item

Provenance: Claude Monet's family. This is an extraordinary Impressionist painting done in July 1889. It is a rare, one-of-a kind piece, as it is immediately recognizable as a “Monet haystack” due to its subject matter and the time of day at which it is painted. Blanche dedicated this painting to her sister Marthe Hoschedé Monet. Here, Blanche is completely under the influence of Claude Monet. She is not only using the same palette and the same colors, but she herself painted at Monet's side; and we are tempted to say that the student has reached the level of the master. Claude Monet’s art dealer, Durand-Ruel, purchased a haystack painting by Blanche Hoschedé Monet, which is presently hanging in Claude Monet’s house in Giverny. The grainstack, formed when the grain has ripened and turned to gold, is a symbol of rural traditions; and indeed, a farmer named Quérel stored his grainstacks in the field that is the subject of Grainstack at Giverny. In this painting, Blanche Hoschedé Monet has captured the golden light of late afternoon in a view to the southwest, toward the hills of Giverny that extend along the left bank. Light floods the scene and emanates from the painting, whose interaction of light and color in the grain, the sky and the soil produces a festival of orange, yellow, brown and gold that, with the blue colors of the hills, creates a striking vision of a summer evening in Giverny. Blanche Hoschedé Monet's Grainstack at Giverny could be compared to the painting done by Claude Monet in the summer of 1888 bearing the title Haystacks at Giverny, The Evening Sun. Claude Monet was inspired by Japanese woodcuts: “In their woodcuts – an art form they call Ukiyo-e or the 'Floating World' – the Japanese attempted to capture an immediate impression of the everyday environment with its endlessly repeated images of day, night, rain, snow, the seasons, this is indeed a floating world, in principle very much like that of Monet, who endlessly returned to the same subject, under different conditions, in his various series – flooding along the Seine, mornings on the river, poppy fields, haystacks, Rouen Cathedral, rows of poplars, views of the Thames.” The series of "Haystacks" and "Grainstacks" (1888-1891) associated with Claude Monet, and therefore Impressionism, is painted under varying light conditions at different times of the day. Monet said: "I'm hard at it, working stubbornly on a series of different effects, but at this time of year the sun sets so fast that it's impossible to keep up with it ... the further I get, the more I see that a lot of work has to be done in order to render what I'm looking for: 'instantaneity.'" Monet painted approximately 30 haystacks, and the series is considered revolutionary, with a lasting impact on the world of art. For instance, upon discovering Monet's haystack paintings in Moscow in 1895, Wassily Kandinsky stated, "I noticed with surprise and confusion that the picture not only gripped me, but impressed itself ineradicably on my memory.” Kandinsky went on to turn the haystack into abstract art. Roy Lichtenstein created serial imagery based on Monet's haystacks: In 1969, in his "Haystack and Cathedral" series, Lichtenstein reinterpreted Monet’s work and transformed it into pop art. Lichtenstein’s Haystack “suggests the shadow being thrown by an imperceptible light source.” (Julianne Fuller Coates)
