He stands as one of the most prolific painters in the Venetian genre. Biography: Antoine Bouvard, also known as Marc Aldine, was born in the picturesque town of Saint-Jean-de-Bournay in L’Isere in 1870. Initially trained as an architect, he delved into the realms of art and architecture under the guidance of Constance-Dufeus at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. His talents eventually elevated him to the esteemed position of Director of Architectural Services for the Seine, where he played a pivotal role in constructing notable landmarks like the Bourse du Travail and the iconic Boulevard Morland in Paris. However, it was during his frequent painting expeditions to Venice that Bouvard's artistic journey underwent a transformative turn. In the captivating city of Venice, he encountered the renowned Venetian artist Felix Ziem, a meeting that profoundly influenced his artistic vision. The delicate and fluid use of color in Bouvard’s work bears the unmistakable mark of Venice’s enchantment. As a true master, he succeeded in capturing the warmth and splendor that characterized this northern Italian gem. Antoine Bouvard, also known by the pseudonym Marc Aldine, broadened his artistic horizons by exploring alternative markets for his work. His paintings stand as a testament to his delicate yet confident brushwork, masterfully capturing the charm of one of the world’s most romantic cities. Bouvard’s popularity surged due to his deep appreciation and understanding of Venice. His artistic prowess allowed him to skillfully convey not only the architectural marvels but also the unique colors and play of light that defined this city. Through his art, Bouvard not only immortalized the famous sights of Venice, such as the Grand Canal and the Santa Maria Della Salute but also captured the city’s everyday life and the tranquility of its hidden corners. Venice had long been a favored destination for travelers on the ‘Grand Tour’ during the 18th and 19th centuries. With the expansion of the European Rail Network in the latter part of the 19th century, the city’s allure drew even greater numbers of visitors. Throughout his lifetime, Bouvard exhibited his works across France and Italy, gaining recognition in provincial European galleries. Antoine Bouvard passed away in his hometown in 1955. Today, his paintings are cherished internationally and enjoy immense popularity and acclaim. He stands as one of the most prolific painters of the Venetian genre, his work serving as a timeless window into the captivating beauty of Venice.

Koekkoek, in the realm of 19th-century art, emerges as a captivating painter born in Amsterdam on November 23, 1849. A scion of the esteemed Koekkoek family, he gained renown for his landscapes and woodland scenes, following in the artistic footsteps of his father, marine painter Hermanus Koekkoek. Barend Hendrik Koekkoek’s life unfolds with a certain mystery, his artistic journey shaped by training from his father and, likely, his uncle Marinus Adrianus. In 1878, he tied the knot with Carolina Allardina Cornelia Pierson and ventured into the artistic scenes of Hilversum and Brussels, simultaneously opening an art dealership in Amsterdam. Around 1882, the call of London beckoned, echoing the path paved by his brother Hermanus Koekkoek the Younger. In England, he painted landscapes near Guildford, akin to his cousin Pieter Hendrik Koekkoek. The latter part of his life remains shrouded in obscurity. Barend Hendrik Koekkoek’s artistic style, steeped in the romantic tradition of the Koekkoek family, adorned canvases with landscapes, woodlands, and marine scenes. His London sojourn witnessed the creation of winter landscapes with towering trees, showcased in exhibitions across Dutch cities. He breathed his last in London before 1909. His artistic legacy lives on in institutions like the Paul Tétar van...

French Mid 19th Century Portrait of an Italian Brigand. Oil on Canvas.
Located in Cotignac, FR
Mid 19th Century oil on canvas portrait of an Italian brigand, unsigned, in painted wood and gilt frame. The painting is a fine and fascinating rendition with plenty of wonderful character and detail to the costume, accessories, landscape and seascape. Very atmospheric and imposing much like the character it portrays. There is a trade stamp to the back of the canvas for the Paris firm of Susse Freres. The canvas is on a fine quality stretcher with 'keys'. There is an artist's name or title written on the top of the rear stretcher (see photo). Bands of brigands who populated the hills of southern Italy were steady fodder for the Romantic imagination, and their exploits were reported both factually, fancifully and artistically The painting dates from a period when France, under its then leader Napoleon III, was involved in the conflicts in the Italian states and the unification and eventual creation of the nation of Italy. An earlier and similar portrait exists of the infamous brigand Mazzocchi by Achille-Etna Michallony . Léon Cogniet...
