Calo Carratalá
Marinas No. 3 by Calo Carratalá - Landscape painting, seascape, Tanzania

2020

About the Item

Marinas No. 3 is a unique oil on wood painting by contemporary artist Calo Carratalá, dimensions are 22 × 35 cm (8.7 × 13.8 in). The artwork is signed, sold unframed and comes with a certificate of authenticity. This landscape painting transports the audience to Tanzania's coasts on the Indian Ocean, where the artist found inspiration. This oil on wood is a portion of a series of 40 works of art called Marinas that was first displayed in public as an installation for the exhibition 'África, el paisaje inesperado' (December 2020–March 2021) at Bancaja Foundation (Sagunto, Spain). Contemporary painter Calo Carratalá was born in 1959 near Valencia, Spain, and specialises in figurative paintings of natural landscapes. He has travelled widely to destinations from the Amazon to Norway and developed a romantic view of nature, extolling its beauty and the power of the elements that make it up. Travel is at the heart of the artist’s creative process: he immerses himself in the places he visits in order to paint them. With sketchbook in hand, the artist captures his immediate impressions of the various panoramas. The kind of nature that Calo Carratalá paints is troubling, perhaps even worrying, and really grandiose inspiring both admiration and contemplation, much like the artists of the romantic era.

Urbex is the English acronym for urban exploration and is an activity that consists of searching for and locating abandoned infrastructure with the goal of visiting, photographing and conveying its contents, with particular involvement of methodologies from geography, anthropology, sociology to cultural studies. Her works have been in the past approached to the works of Anselm Kiefer (b. 1945) and Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720-1770), but in Gullotta's paintings the absence of color makes the spaces particularly ethereal, allowing them to be ideally lifted to new places and to new life. We often speak of a "brain drain," but in this case we are truly happy to be able to say that this is a "return," and an important one: an artist of international caliber who has decided to entrust her return to her homeland to Almach Art...
