About the Item

"Waterways" is a stunning original oil painting by Carl Lindin (1869-1942), a Swedish-American artist known for his beautiful landscapes. This 1920s-1930s signed framed oil painting captures a serene scene of sailboats off the coast of Lysekil, Sweden. The composition, filled with rich tones and atmospheric detail, showcases Lindin’s mastery of capturing both light and nature. Presented in a custom frame, the outer dimensions measure 30 ¼ x 36 ½ x 1 ¼ inches, with the image size measuring 25 ¾ x 32 x ½ inches. Provenance: Estate of the artist, Carl Eric Lindin About the Artist: Carl Lindin, originally from Sweden, immigrated to the United States in 1887, settling in Chicago, Illinois, where he studied at the Chicago Art Institute. He later traveled to France in 1893 to study painting at the prestigious Académie Julien under Benjamin Constant and Jean-Paul Laurens. His time in Paris greatly influenced his work, and he became familiar with prominent European art movements. Upon returning to Chicago in 1897, Lindin developed a strong connection with Hervey White, a poet and writer, and both became active members of the Hull-House, a settlement house in Chicago that offered support for immigrants. Lindin’s journey continued when he moved to Woodstock, New York, to join the Byrdcliffe art colony. Alongside White, Lindin played a vital role in the early development of the Woodstock Artists Association, becoming one of its five founding members. Lindin was known for his ability to bridge the gap between traditionalist and modernist artists in the Association, believing both styles had merit. He also served as Chairman of the Woodstock Friends of Art and helped secure WPA work for artists during the Great Depression. As a "painter of moonlight and night," Lindin often depicted tranquil landscapes, influenced by Tonalism and Post-Impressionism, with later works showcasing his exploration of Expressionism during the 1920s. His legacy includes contributions to the artistic community in Woodstock and beyond, leaving behind a body of work that beautifully captures the intersection of light, nature, and mood.
