Cesare Maggi
Tarasp Castle 1960

1960

About the Item

Oil on cardboard. Signed and dated bottom right. Roman-born artist Cesare Maggi established himself as a Divisionist landscape painter, depicting Engadine and Aosta Valley alpine landscapes, often enlivened by the inclusion of figures and animals. He became friends with the painter Giacomo Grosso in Turin in 1901 and then successfully turned to the portrait genre, setting aside the Divisionist technique. While still favoring high mountain views, he broadened his subjects by also engaging in seascapes and still lifes. Proposed here is the snowy view of Tarasp Castle, an 11th-century fortress in the Swiss Lower Engadine. This is a late work by the artist, but he remained tied to his favorite subject, the alpine landscape, until the very end, although he had by then abandoned the pointillist technique of his early period. The work is presented in a styled frame.
