About the Item
Charles Blondin was known for his impressionistic street scenes depicting popular locations in Europe. This painting is a tremendously vivid and alive street scene from Paris in the 20th Century, depicting Sacre Coure & Montmatre in France it is near the summit of the city's elevated Montmartre quarter. The vibrant colors and impressionistic brushwork is done with both whimsey and boldness. Montmatre is depicted on a beautiful sunny day with many figures and cafes. An artist painting in the street, with more artists walking about. The charm of the many details are noted throughout, with classic cars depicted in the background of the street, as a waiter serves guests on the lower right. A crowd gathers around an artists as he captures the romanticism of the day. This painting is signed by the artist lower left and it comes comes housed in a beautiful wood carved frame with liner and ready to be displayed with hanging wire on verso.

Charles Blondin was a French impressionist painter and print maker known for his depictions of Paris during different seasons. Born in 1913 in France, Blondin lived and painted Paris during the 1930's and 1940's and he was a member of the School of Paris, or Ecole de Paris and his most active period dates from 1928 to the 1950s. The Paris Etching Society and the Camilla Lucas Gallery published a colorful series of color etchings by Blondin of iconic views of Paris. His birth name is unknown as he took the name of Charles Blondin from the famous Jean-François Gravelet dit Charles Blondin (1824-1897) whom was a French tight rope walker who crossed the Niagara on a tightrope in 1859. The artist Charles Blondin died 1991.
