Charles Jones Way
Charles Jones Way ( 1835 - 1919 ) Stream above Ospedaletti Italy Oil Painting

ca. 1895

About the Item

Charles Jones Way (English, ∗ 25th July 1835 Dartmouth, Devon, England; † 13th of February 1919 Lausanne, Switzerland) Small stream above Ospedaletti, Italy • Oil on artist board, visible image ca. 36 x 25 cm • Tasteful, modern frame ca. 52 x 41 cm • Signed bottom left • Inscribed ‘Ospedaletti ‘bottom right Delightful, very detailed painting of a little piece of summery subtropical wilderness along a small, winding stream and some overgrown buildings beyond, somewhere in the hills above the costal Comune of Ospedaletti (respectively ‘Spiareti’ in Ligurian), which is a small village in the province of Imperia in the Italian region of Liguria, about 120 kilometres southwest of Genoa. The little stream somewhere above Ospedaletti was a favoured subject of the artist and various scenes painted in oil and water colour exist. For example a similar oil was sold this year in May as Lot by Gardner Galleries in Ontario, Canada. The oil painting on offer today is extremely detailed and finely executed and I suggest it might well is based on the plein air water colour study, which recently surfaced in England this year (Sworders Fine Art Auctioneers, England / 4th of April, 2023 / Lot 180) and was probably painted in the artist’s studio on return from one of his travels. C. J. Way was born on the 25th of July in 1835 and travelled as far as to north America and Canada, as well as locally in England and Wales and to Europe, mainly Italy and the Swiss Alps to paint his scenic landscapes for which he is famous for. Initially a water colour artist, but from about 1870 on he also began to paint in oils. Way received his artistic training from a very early age at Somerset House in London, then at the Central School of Art in Marlborough House and finishing at the South Kensington School of Art under Sir Richard Redgrave, to graduate in 1858 as an artist and instructor. He then moved to Montreal in Canada and established a studio, where he taught drawing and painting as well as taking on commissions as a colourist for the photographer William Notman. He got involved with the Art Association of Montreal and in 1860 he exhibited his well-received paintings at the Industrial Exhibition held at Montreal's Crystal Place. Various successful exhibitions and collaborations, as well as prestigious mandates followed. In 1873, due to a recession, but mainly a smallpox outbreak in Montreal, Way travelled with his family to London, England and in 1874 they moved on to Switzerland and settled in the French speaking part of Switzerland in Lausanne, where he became a member of the Société des Peintres et Sculpteurs Suisses. Whilst residing in Switzerland and traveling to neighboring Italy, Way remained in close contact with the Royal Canadian Academy and the Art Association of Montreal and continued sending paintings for exhibition. In 1876 he showed six paintings in oil and watercolour in the Canadian section of the Centennial International Exposition in Philadelphia and was awarded a silver medal. Various appointments followed and in 1898 C. J. Way was commissioned by the Canadian Pacific Railroad (CPR) to paint a series of Canadian landscapes, for which he returned to Canada together with his younger daughter Aimée, born 1873 in Lausanne and also an artist, for about two years. Upon his return to Switzerland, he continued sending his work depicting European and British landscapes to Canada to exhibit until about a year before he died in Lausanne on the 13th of February 1919. Today Charles Jones Way’s oeuvre is held in a number of public collections in Canada including the National Gallery of Canada, Art Gallery of Ontario, Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, McCord Museum, Le Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec etc. Thank you for your interest and please note, that I offer free worldwide shipping on all my items.

Alphons (Alfons) Müller (Swiss, * 24.8.1898 Mitlödi, † 8.6.1955 Biel) ' Im Häfeli ' The small harbor at the Lake of Biel / Bienne in Switzerland • Oil on artist board, ca. 47 x 38 cm • Frame, ca. 54 x 45 cm • Signed bottom right Alphons Müller lived and worked in the watch industries in Biel/Bienne in Switzerland up to about 1933. He then decided to become a full-time artist and painted landscapes, still lifes, portraits/nudes in various styles up to his early death in 1955. Alphons Müller was the proverbial hardworking bohemian artist. He lived in a small cold room above a pup and often struggled to make ends meet. On one hand he would paint commercial views of local beauty spots - often of the Lake of Bienne. These paintings were generally executed using very thin paint layers (to make the expensive material last longer ...) in a very bright impressionist style. On the other hand, he would create intelligent, generous and deep reaching images - especially during the war. In the late thirties he meets his two loyal patrons, the baker Werner Gass and the pharmacist...
