About the Item
'Landscape', oil on canvas, by Charles Kvapil (1928). The artist, Kvapil, has scores of tremendous artworks which depict scenes in nature such as this one. Here, a bit of Mediterranean sun peeks furtively through the foliage to subtly illuminate a walking path through pristine countryside. The depth of colour, particularly the green foliage, is spellbinding. The hues in the verdant path are shaded to some extent by the overcast sky. The artist invites the viewer to visually walk the narrow path with just a hope of getting a glimpse of what lies at the other end. Perhaps there may be a whiff of the Mediterranean itself just beyond. This artwork is approaching 100 years old yet maintains the vibrancy the artist imparted to the work. Although one may notice some characterful cracks in the paint, the work is in good overall condition as it has recently undergone a cleaning and reconditioning by an art restoration specialist. It is also newly framed with a French-style linen slip. Please enjoy the many photos accompanying the listing. Upon request a video may be provided.
About the Artist: Charles Kvapil was born in 1884 in Antwerp, Belgium. He exhibited his first works there in 1908 at the Salon d'Anvers. After the war he attended l'Académie des Beaux-Arts in Antwerp and began to exhibit in Paris in 1920 at the Salon des Indépendants. Kvapil was known primarily as a painter of people, in particular of curvaceous nudes. He moved into a studio in Montmartre where he painted his models in the studio with Sacre Coeur as backdrop. He also painted in the countryside like the Impressionists. Kvapil's paintings are creative and modern; his nudes and bouquets of flowers are energetic and powerful. His palette is rich in cobalt blues and in fiery earth tones. His technique is intuitive and confident. Although his oils were often modestly presented on panels of wood or soft board, those formats did not detract from the evident talent he displayed nor from the joy exemplified in his paintings.

Characters in a Surrealist Landscape
By Lucien Coutaud
Located in London, GB
'Characters in a Surrealist Landscape', oil on canvas, by Lucien Coutaud (1931). A couple entwine with the male character seemingly in grief, the female not returning with a comforting embrace. In the distant landscape a sole character meanders. This painting seems to be a creation of the artist's dreams, perhaps reflecting events in his personal life. It seems there is a relationship problem. In the world of Surrealists, there is a focus on the unconscious mind through Freudian methods of free association, trance-like states or dreams. Some Surrealists practiced psychic 'automatism' which was automatic writing or drawing, turning off the conscious mind and producing streams of words or images directly from the unconscious. In unlocking the unconscious in this way, Surrealism was individually expressed (Ref. 'The Short Story of Art...
