Charles Martin Hardie
Picking Blackberries

1880-1910

About the Item

'Picking Blackberries' is a 19th/early 20th century oil on canvas painting of a Scottish coastal path view with yellow gorse and berry bushes. Children are picking berries or sitting enjoying the view overlooking the sea, depicting halcyon days of summer. Scottish artist Charles Martin Hardie (1858-1916) was a member of the Scottish Royal Academy. He started work as a carpenter but turned to painting after encouragement by artist John Pettie and studied art in Edinburgh. He established an art studio there, and exhibited in Scotland and also in the Royal Academy. His work is represented in the Scottish National Gallery. Hardie is known for portraiture, with excellent examples of poet Robbie Burns and Sir Walter Scott, but also narrative and historical paintings. He has demonstrated affinity with children as subjects, as in this lovely narrative of berry-picking, and landscapes. 'Picking Berries' has impressionistic qualities in light, sun and broad brushes of bushes and sea. The painting is presented in a fine period frame with depth and ornate and decorative gilt carving. The canvas sight is 18.5 by 23.5, with a seven inch lining and frame. The frame depth is five inches. Hardie signed the painting, lower left. This is overall very good condition, both the painting and the period frame. Both the artwork and the frame are in overall very good condition. The frame has very minor imperfections mostly behind the gilt carvings. Imperfections are to be expected in a painting this age. This painting has clearly been cared for and cherished many years. Now it is ready to hang on your wall.

Women walking by stop to listen, a man carrying a sack has stopped to watch the rider, people are in the Inn doorway, and one is looking out the window. Children pause their playing. The scene is under a large tree beside the Inn; a whole community waiting for news. There is a great deal of detail in the scene, tree and Inn house...
