About the Item

Charles Pachter (b. 1942) is one of the most collected and cherished Canadian artists. His iconic, uplifting and patriotic images have independently earned their place in the nation's museums and the Canadian art canon. While Pachter’s work shares some characteristics with Jim Dine and David Hockney, his voice is resoundingly charming, singular, and uniquely Canadian. The barn, along with Queen Elizabeth and the Moose, form a triad of icons that Pachter has repeatedly visited over the course of his career. With these archetypes, the artist probes at Canadian symbols and colonial histories. His series of Barns perfectly captures his characteristic graphic style, displaying a quintessential Canadian landscape that is recognizable around the world. While Pachter has explored the power and charm of the solitary barn in a landscape, this large painting is striking for its fascinating and highly original palette. Here Pachter embraces the barn yet places in an environment that is terracotta rose with a clay-like pink. This is a rare occasion where Pachter embraces an expressionist and unconventional palette. Charles Pachter (b. 1942) is one of the most collected and cherished Canadian artists. His iconic, uplifting and patriotic images have independently earned their place in museums across the country. Pachter’s artworks, and unique version of Pop Art, have confirmed his position in the canon of 20th century Canadian art. Pachter’s most cherished images take archetypes of Canadiana -- the barn, Queen Elizabeth, and the moose, -- and depict them with a distinct style, a fresh palette (and often through a humorous lens). “Mini Blue Barn...

By Greta Van Campen

Triangle with 18 inch sides Greta Van Campen is known for her geometric hard-edged graphic approach to representation. She has traveled across the United States sourcing inspiration from the landscapes, small towns, and cities. Now, with a young family, she gets most of her inspiration close to home. Scenic ocean views and paintings of flowers from her gardens make up the bulk of her new work. She paints in her home studio, beginning each piece with a photograph she has taken. She uses the photo as a reference while drawing from memories of her experiences, sometimes also working from sketches done on location. The image is translated into a painting by first setting large compositional elements and then finding shapes and masking off areas with tape, mixing the desired color of paint, and continuing to tape and paint until the desired amount of detail is reached. This distilled and stylized approach imbues her traditional subject matter with a freshness and modernity. As Van Campen explains, she “figure(s) out how to recreate a version of the natural, atmospheric place by turning it into a more geometric, color and balance-driven scene that is hopefully appealing, interesting, and authentic.” Van Campen was born in and resides in Maine. She received her BFA from Bowdoin College, ME. She is represented by Octavia Art Gallery, LA & TX, and Dowling Walsh Gallery...
