Charles Verbrugghe, scion of Belgian aristocracy, entered the world on June 15, 1877, amidst the enchanting landscapes of Bruges. His journey through life unfolded as a tapestry of artistry, marking him as a distinguished Impressionist painter with a penchant for capturing the essence of diverse subjects.
Verbrugghe's artistic palette was expansive, spanning town views, landscapes, seascapes, beaches, still lifes, flowers, and portraits. Notably, his canvases came alive with evocative depictions of convents and cityscapes in both Bruges and Paris, earning him acclaim in artistic circles.
In 1907, the artist embarked on a transformative sojourn to Paris, seeking enlightenment under the guidance of the esteemed Flori Van Acker (1858 – 1940). Amidst the vibrant artistic milieu, Verbrugghe forged friendships with luminaries such as Maurice Utrillo (1883 – 1955) and Kees Van Dongen (1877 – 1968). Residing in Montmartre near the iconic Place du Tertre, he painted the charming corners of Paris and frequented the renowned artists' gathering place, "Au Lapin Agile," engaging in stimulating conversations with Degas, Renoir, and Monet.
A yearly pilgrimage to his beloved Bruges became a ritual for Verbrugghe. Whether ensconced in the "Hotel Memling" or the "Pension Notre-Dame," he became affectionately known as "De Brugse Parisien" among the locals. In 1968, his artistic journey came full circle with a retrospective exhibition at the "Galerie Brugeoise" in Bruges, showcasing around a hundred of his masterpieces.
Verbrugghe's artistic signature was marked by brilliant colors and an adept use of vibrant light, a nod to his profound affinity for French Impressionism. As an autodidact, he charted an extraordinary career, initially gravitating towards landscapes before succumbing to the allure of Impressionism, a commitment he steadfastly upheld despite the pressures of the Parisian art scene. His artistic evolution mirrored a transition from darker palettes to resplendent and luminous shades.
The maestro bid adieu to the world in Paris on October 1, 1974, finding solace in the embrace of his son's home in Gorgeslez-Gonesse near Le Bourget. Verbrugghe's artistic legacy reverberates in the art capitals of Paris and Bruges, with his paintings adorning private collections worldwide. The Bruges Museum stands as a testament to his enduring influence, ensuring that the brilliance of Charles Verbrugghe continues to captivate and inspire art connoisseurs across the globe.

Charles Verbrugghe
Verbrugghe Charles was born into Belgian aristocracy on June 15, 1877, in Bruges. He was an Impressionist painter of town views, landscapes, views of the sea and beaches, still lifes, flowers and portraits. He is well known for painting of the convents and city views of Bruges and Paris. In 1907, he went to Paris to study under the master teacher Flori Van Acker (1858 – 1940). There, he became friends with the artist Maurice Utrillo ( 1883 – 1955) and Kees Van Dongen (1877 – 1968). During that time, he lived in Montmartre near the Place du Tertre and painted the quaint corners of Paris. At the meeting point of the famous artists “Au Lapin Agile” he often came into contact with Degas, Renoir and Monet. Every year he visited Bruges, a city he knew by heart. During his stay, he moved into the “Hotel Memling” either in the “Pension Notre-Dame”. In Bruges, they called him “De Brugse Parisien”. In 1968, there was a retrospective in Bruges in the “Galerie Brugeoise” with about a hundred of his works. Verbrugghe utilized brilliant colors in his paintings and bathed his subjects in vibrant light. He was highly influenced by the French Impressionism. As an autodidact he would build up a remarkable career. Initially he mainly focused on landscapes. Afterwards he was charmed by Impressionism, a tendency that he would always remain faithful to, despite the pressure of the Parisian artistic world. He evolved from darker shades to more bright ones later on. The painter died in Paris on October 1, 1974 in the house of his son in Gorgeslez-Gonesse near Le Bourget. Many of Verbrugghe’s works can be found in Paris and Bruges. Today, his paintings are in private collections spread all over the world and in the Bruges Museum.
