Clark Van Clemenson
View of Isola bella on Lake Maggiore canvas by Clark Van Clemenson

About the Item

Clark Van Clemenson (1910- ?) Isola bella on Lake Maggiore oil on canvas, 100x160 cm with frame, 122 x 182 cm signed at lower right C. Clemenson The painting under review shows a beautiful view of Isola Bella, one of the so-called Borromean Islands, reflected in the waters of Lake Maggiore. The foreground features the small beach to which two small boats are docked, and the scene is animated by a girl, the only human presence in the entire painting. High snow-capped mountains embrace The Island and the lake. The oil on canvas is, as can be seen from the signature at lower right, the work of painter Clark Van Clemenson, born in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, in 1910. Unknown, however, is the date of death. Until 1630 Isola Bella was a rock inhabited by fishermen, with two small churches and a few vegetable gardens. The Borromeos, already owners of Isola Madre since 1501, from the first two decades of the seventeenth century with Julius Caesar III and Charles III decided to focus their interests on this new little island, initiating the grandiose project that would lead to the creation of the palace and the Italian-style garden, clearly recognizable in the painting. The Borromeo Palace, whose 80-meter-long façade dominates the north end of the island, was built throughout the 17th century and has a T-shaped plan with a curvilinear projection in the center at the hall of honor. The surrounding garden was built from about 1631 to 1671. The Teatro Massimo, visible in the distance behind the palace, is the most important monument in the Isola Bella garden: statues, obelisks and fountains are perfectly integrated with the vegetation of the ten scenic terraces, on the top of which stands the statue of the Unicorn, the heraldic symbol of the Borromeo family. The pastel shades employed by the artist instill in the viewer a sense of stillness, calm and inner peace, making the island a kind of locus amoenus. Particular is the pictorial rendering: The small beach in the foreground as well as the foliage or snow-capped mountain peaks are characterized by an extreme pictorial materiality, so much so that the color in these places is not perfectly spread but rather deliberately left in relief giving a particular texture to the painting. Other portions of the painting such as, for example, the body of water or the boats are treated by the painter by smoothing the color and juxtaposing it with brush or palette knife strokes without describing them minutely but allowing the image to define itself from a distant view from the canvas

Antonio Francesco Peruzzini (Ancona, 1643/1646 - Milan, 1724) Rural landscape with river and village center Rural landscape with river and tower (2) Oil on canvas, cm 108 x 62 Expert opinion Prof. Emilio Negro Recognizable in the present pair of paintings is the hand of what Mina Gregori called "the most original and path-breaking landscape painter to emerge in the late seventeenth century," namely Antonio Francesco Peruzzini. Finally identified by Arslan in 1959 as such a "Perugino," author of a St. Sebastian in a private Milanese collection, Peruzzini has in recent times been reevaluated from his former qualification as a mere subordinate of Lissandrino (Alessandro Magnasco), in comparison with whom he turns out to be an excellent coadjutor and original landscape painter. A distant mountainous horizon, of frozen vigor, is proposed in both canvases interspersed with a spindly tree in the background that screws swirlingly to the sky. The anti-academicism and nonconformism that characterized Peruzzini's entire career appear evident here and justify in retrospect his choice of such figurative collaborators as Magnasco and Sebastiano Ricci...
