About the Item

A French Impressionist oil on canvas painting of flowering fruit trees in an orchard. The painting is presented in a giltwood and green painted frame. A very charming and atmospheric painting of flowering fruit trees in an orchard strewn with spring flowers. The artist has captured all the joy and freshness of spring. The blossom on the trees is created using an 'impasto' technique to give the feeling of the abundance and weight of the blossom whilst the tree branches themselves are almost in 'scrafitto' to give contrast. The foreground is beautifully painted with a lightness of touch to give the feeling of the long meadow grass dotted with all the spring flowers. The artist has also created a clever perspective with all the 'weight' of the painting in the upper portion drawing us in, we can imagine walking barefoot through the lush grass and into the shade and fragrance of the orchard beyond. Clearly influenced by the paintings of the earlier Impressionists this work is very reminiscent of the paintings of Claude Monet for whom fruit trees in blossom was a recurrent theme. In April 1890, when Claude Monet discovered the small village of Giverny, all the apple trees of the area were blooming. In the garden of the property, called “Le Pressoir”, stood tens of apple trees, whose gentle pink flowers enhanced the hues of the façade. This became the subject of his iconic painting 'Apple Trees in Blossom at Giverny' of 1900/01. Fruit trees in blossom were also an inspiration to another Impressionist, Vincent Van Gogh. 'Flowering Orchards' is a series of paintings which Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh executed in Arles, in southern France in the spring of 1888. Van Gogh arrived in Arles in February 1888 in a snowstorm; within two weeks the weather changed and the fruit trees were in blossom. Appreciating the symbolism of rebirth, Van Gogh worked with optimism and zeal on about fourteen paintings of flowering trees in the early spring. He also made paintings of flowering trees in Saint-Rémy the following year, in 1889. Flowering trees were special to Van Gogh; they represented awakening and hope. He enjoyed them aesthetically and found joy in painting flowering trees. The 'trees and orchards in bloom' paintings that he made reflect Impressionist, Divisionist and Japanese woodcut influences.
