Cornelis Huysmans, known as Huysmans de Malines, sutied with Jacques d'Arthois in Brussels in the 1670s. He then settled in Mechelen in the province of Antwerp. He then joined the painters' guild of Mechelen in 1688.
The art of Cornelis Huysmans is recognizable: a landscape with rocks and large trees, a sort of waterfall of sand on which the light falls. As Emile Michel writes, "By contrasting the striking breaks in these limestone rocks with the yellowish greens of the vegetation and the luscious blue of the distance, Huysmans made harmonious use of these contrasts."
He is part of the revival of the Flemish landscape at the end of the 17th century.
"Huysmans' landscapes seem to hesitate between all the major landscape trends at the end of the 18th century, but end up synthesizing them in a very lyrical way: his dark woodland views, animated by vivid lighting effects captured by rock motifs and sandy terrain, are painted with a beautiful vigor of impasto, in a heroic style close to Salvator Rosa or Dughet. » (Dictionary of Painting under the direction of Michel Laclotte and Jean-Pierre Cuzin, Larousse, 2003)
His paintings are exhibited in numerous museums in France (at the Louvre, in Amiens, Caen, Le Havre, Strasbourg and Valenciennes) and in Europe (in Brussels, Antwerp, Dresden, Copenhagen and at the Hermitage in Saint Petersburg)

Johannes JANSON (Attributed to) Amboyna (Moluccan Islands), 1729 - Leyden, 1784 Oil on canvas 47 x 57 cm (62 x 72 cm with frame) Trace of signature lower right Monogrammed and dated on the back "1755"Inscription on the recto « Johannes Janson »
Very beautiful frame of the 18th century in gilded wood
Good condition (just a bit of thinness, a repair and a few repaints, well restored)
As for the painting by Johannes Janson exhibited in the Louvre museum, our painting is also a "typical example of retrospective pastiche - much appreciated in the 18th century. – of recognized masters of the Golden Age, the specialists in Dutch rustic landscape Potter, Adriaen van de Velde or Dujardin. Recognizable in our painting is the way Janson represents trees, and animals (the horse in particular on the left is recognizable). And also the silhouettes of his small characters painted in bright colors. This village fair is a rich composition with many characters, musicians, drummers, peasant men and women, children. The scene is very cheerful and it has the charm of the festive atmosphere of the Dutch countryside with many picturesque details represented such as the dancers with a glass or a pitcher in their hands, the dishes or baskets which circulate filled with food, the child playing with a dog or the musician with the violin who animates the assembly. The vivid colors are characteristic of Dutch 17th century genre...

Our painting is very close to the art of Jacob van Strij studied and may have been painted in the circle of this artist. Jacob van Strij studied at the Academy of Painting in Antwerp and with Andreas Lens. Back in Dordrecht, he became a landscape painter. Both individually and with his brother Abraham, he painted various wallpapers for clients in Dordrecht. According to Jacob van Strij biographer Johannes Immerzeel, “His passion and concern for faithfully imitating nature went so far that Van Strij, as ill as he was (for years Van Strij was plagued with gout) he asked someone to pull his sled along the ice in the biting cold in order to make sketches for his paintings, which he then executed in his workshop ”. Van Strij used these sketches for various paintings. He was inspired by 17th century old masters, in particular Albert Cuyp...

Thomas van Apshoven (1622– 1664) was a Flemish painter known for his landscapes with peasant scenes and genre scenes in interiors. His genre scenes depict village festivals, the interiors of taverns, village scenes or landscapes with peasants engaged in various activities, singeries, guardroom scenes and laboratories of alchemists. Some still lifes have also been attributed to him. His themes and style are close to that of David Teniers the Younger. He was born on 30 November 1622 in Antwerp as the eldest son of Ferdinand van Apshoven the Elder and Leonora Wijns. His father was a painter who had studied with Adam van Noort and had become a master of the Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke in 1596. No paintings by his father are known. His younger brother Ferdinand van Apshoven the Younger became also a successful painter. Thomas studied under his father. Some sources state that he became a pupil of the prominent genre painter David Teniers the Younger. It is more likely, however, that he was an imitator of Teniers. He was registered as a 'wijnmeester' [son of a master] in the Guild of St. Luke of Antwerp in the guild year 1645–1646. He married Barbara Janssens on 22 March 1645. The couple had four children. The godfathers of the children included the painters Victor Wolfvoet...
