About the Item
Mid-century modern oil on canvas by Sicilian painter Jean Calogero, 1922-2001. Fantasy scene of three black gondolas on a Venice canal, with green water, blue skies and Venetian architecture in background. Rich impasto, artist scratches in wet paint to create patterns and textures in the multilayered canvas, and fantasy flourishes adds to the compelling narrative of a festive day in Venice. Comes in original period custom frame. Includes the original business card from Galerie du Vieux-Chalet in Paris when painting was purchased in 1960 and the catalog given at purchase with the painting titled: "Calogero", by Waldemar George, published by Editions Galerie Madsen.
