About the Item
Heller covers monumental and lesser-known works starting with Frank Lloyd Wright and tracing his design principles through his son Lloyd Wright, and students Richard Neutra, Rudolph Schindler, and John Lautner. Heller uses his refined artist’s eye and virtuosic ability with oil paint to emphasize the groundbreaking hard-edged geometries used in these designs. Light and shadow play off the structures - creating new geometries - which further emphasize these architects’ outside-the-box thinking.
This series is a glorious homage to a vibrant era of architecture in Southern California and depicts the staggeringly forward-thinking designs of some of the most innovative architects of the 20th century. Heller writes, “My goal is to evoke how striking these creations are; how they were groundbreaking for the time, but continue to inspire today.”
Los Angeles, in both its landscape, light, and in the freedom that it embodies, continues to provides a unique and inspiring environment for artists. In his paintings, Heller pays close attention to how many of these projects are a collection of simple squares and rectangles cantilevered over LA’s unique terrain. The shadows cast by verdant plant life around the buildings, the hints of glorious Los Angeles vistas in the distance, the reflections in a pool - all these brilliant details come together to capture a ground breaking era of pioneering design and create masterful paintings.
Danny Heller received his BA in paintings from UC Santa Barbara in 2004 and has exhibited extensively throughout Southern California as well as in New York City, Denver, Chicago, Washington DC, and Boulonge-Billancourt, France. In 2021, The Hilbert Museum of California Art acquired a painting for their permanent collection. His work has been published in CA Home + Design, American Art Collector, Southwest Art, CA Modern Magazine, Atomic Ranch Magazine, and was profiled on KCET. He currently lives and works in Desert Hot Springs, CA.

Danny Heller
Danny Heller paints the reality of the American environment: how structures once revered for their groundbreaking ideas in design and social planning have been perpetuated and how they have been forgotten. Primarily focusing on the nation’s mid-century identity, Heller plays with lighting, dramatic angles, and specific colors to form engaging paintings that capture architectural elements. He uses a realistic style to paint those moments where design and environment come together harmoniously in order to showcase the compelling characteristics of these spaces. In some ways, Heller acts as a documentarian of an endangered architectural culture in America. However, these paintings are a bit more personal, as they tend to focus on locations from the artist's childhood or at least slices of an era recounted to him from his parents’ and grandparents’ times. By painting these historically and personally significant scenes, Heller reconnects with a presumably by-gone time period whose remnants actually still exist. Because
especially in an age that values constant change, when the past is demolished to
make way for the brand new, we are at risk of losing our collective history. Without
which, we leave ourselves devoid of a foundation to build our future on.

On the Way 1
By Karen Woods
Located in Fairfield, CT
Karen Woods paints a traveler’s view through the window of a moving vehicle rendered in subtly nuanced gestures in oil on canvas or panel. These views from the front seat of a car looking through an often rain-splattered windshield or side window, are always about water: water from above, as a rainstorm, or from below, as a man-made sprinkler system. She is drawn to the interplay of water and light, and how it affects our perception of reality through reflection, distortion, and transformation.
The compositions often include a bit of the car - the edge of a window, a side mirror, the clear curved area left by a windshield wiper - these markers situate the viewer on the journey Woods is on - we are taken inside the vehicle and shown the vignettes that catch Woods’ eye. The paintings reclaim that point in time, explore its detail, and unearth its emotional content.
Woods’ work freezes and compresses a moment of everyday life; then elongates and decelerates it and in so doing, reveals its accompanying emotional weight: its anticipation, reflection, isolation, and longing. Woods is coaxing us to recognize the transcendent experiences offered by the most mundane or ordinary surroundings of our daily lives.
Karen Woods was born in Seattle, WA, in 1963. She received her BFA from the California College of the Arts (Oakland, CA) in 1987 with additional studies at California Polytechnic State University and Studio Art Centers International, Florence, Italy. Her paintings have been exhibited throughout the United States with solo exhibitions in Los Angeles, New York, and Boston, among others, and her work has been published in New American Paintings, American Art Collector, art ltd, Artweek, Western Art & Architecture, Fine Art Connoisseur, and the Idaho Statesmen. Woods’ paintings are included the public collections of the Bodleian Library, Oxford, UK, James Castle...
