David Konigsberg
From a Window Seat #1 (Abstract Landscape in Blue and Grey by David Konigsberg)

2021

About the Item

David Konigsberg From a Window Seat #1, 2021 56" X 58" oil on canvas This contemporary abstracted landscape was made by Hudson, NY-based artist, David Konigsberg, in 2021. The artist exquisitely paints billowy clouds that reflect light and shadow; their delicate suspension suggests imminent evolution and change. Subtle transitions of light and soft brushwork gives dimension to their soft forms. About the artist and work: David Konigsberg shares a renewed reverence for his surroundings in the Hudson Valley, where he has made his home for the past four years. Known for a conceptual realism that has, in the past, used landscape as a backdrop—and everything from angels to fantastical flying machines as characters and metaphors—with this series the artist moves the backdrop forward, in paintings that are more frankly personal and quietly revealing. An avid hiker, Konigsberg draws from long walks in farm country and frequent climbs among the peaks of the nearby Catskills and Taconics. Still, while his references are specific to the region, these paintings transcend location to enter a realm that is tranquil, deeply spiritual and universal. Beyond subject matter, the magic of the work can be found in Konigsberg’s handling of paint, in both the gestural brushwork that propels his characters and the use of layers to create illusions—for example, of haze or morning mist in an environment filled with atmospheric drama. David Konigsberg is a conceptual realist who works across media and painting genres to portray transitional spaces, metaphoric moments and alternative histories. A long-time member of the Gowanus and Red Hook artist communities in Brooklyn, he is now based in Hudson and employs the area's landscapes as the setting and sometimes subject of his work. The artist’s work has been exhibited throughout out the United States and has been featured in The New York Times, Chronogram and Brooklyn Journal and numerous art and culture blogs. David Konigsberg lives and works in Hudson, New York.

"My life as a painter began in the late 1950s when abstraction was “The only game in town”. I followed and progressed through gesture, organic and finally, geometric non-objective painting. The radical move for me was to discover that the real world of landscape lurked behind all that past work. My childhood in the mountains of Pennsylvania pervaded my “way of seeing” and I wanted to investigate and celebrate the infinite variety of tone, color and composition that I found around me. Sky, the structure of trees, mist and water appeared to fill a hunger to look again and again. There was mystery and danger lurking behind the beauty, and my aim was to try to avoid the cliché and explore the infinite structure of the visual landscape. Now I use my camera as a sketchbook and search for images that seem to offer odd structure and “mystery”. I shoot multiple points of view, cull, crop, and mostly discard. The surviving photographs become the catalyst for the paintings and the process is always a mediation between memory and the small image pinned to my easel...
