In “On The Way There”, David Wilson takes the viewer on a journey down a slick, rain-soaked street leading towards one of New York’s most famous bridges. The blue tones that dominate the painting evoke a cool, almost melancholic atmosphere, while the bright yellow lights of the cars create striking contrasts as they reflect off the wet pavement. A single car commands the foreground of the scene, while another sits at the bottom of the road, drawing the viewer’s eye toward the looming silhouette of the bridge in the background. Hailing from Canada’s Pacific Northwest, artist David Wilson’s work has long been informed by the oft rain soaked urban environment he calls home. Whether he’s travelling the globe or exiting through the studio door, Wilson’s experience of his world becomes a celebration of the season of long nights and drenched, reflective streets.
Wilson has established himself as one of Canada’s preeminent urban landscape painters with more than 25 solo exhibitions. His work tends to step away from the literal translation of a scene into something more interpretive and evocative.
Working primarily with acrylics, Wilson’s paintings are built upon multiple layers of light and colour, infused—beneath the evocative veneer—with the notion of what we know and think we know, or remember.
