About the Item
This exceptional artwork is currently on display and available for sale at Signet Contemporary Art Gallery and online.
“When You Least Expect It” by David Wilson transports the viewer to a wide, empty New York street, where a few scattered cars line the sides and a couple of headlights break through the distance. The deep blue tones of the night dominate the scene, creating an almost dreamlike atmosphere. Small flecks of yellow light, reflecting off car windows or street lamps, stand out against the dark backdrop, adding a touch of warmth to the otherwise cool-toned painting. The empty street and lack of pedestrians give the painting a sense of stillness, as if the city has momentarily paused in its constant hustle.
Wilson’s treatment of the light and shadow is particularly striking in this piece, as the small but potent highlights of yellow punctuate the scene, drawing the viewer’s eye across the width of the street and towards the distant cars. The vastness of the road and the deep perspective of the painting create a sense of space, making the viewer feel as if they could step into the scene and walk along the quiet street. This moment, frozen in time, speaks to the unexpected pauses in life, where we find beauty in places we might not normally notice.
This stunning artwork is signed by David Wilson and available for purchase at Signet Contemporary Art in Chelsea, as well as online. “When You Least Expect It” offers a reflective moment in New York’s urban landscape, reminding viewers that sometimes the most profound moments are found in the stillness of the city’s expansive streets.
Artist biography:
Hailing from Canada’s Pacific Northwest, artist David Wilson’s work has long been informed by the oft rain soaked urban environment he calls home. Whether he’s travelling the globe or exiting through the studio door, Wilson’s experience of his world becomes a celebration of the season of long nights and drenched, reflective streets.
Wilson has established himself as one of Canada’s preeminent urban landscape painters with more than 25 solo exhibitions. His work tends to step away from the literal translation of a scene into something more interpretive and evocative.
Working primarily with acrylics, Wilson’s paintings are built upon multiple layers of light and colour, infused—beneath the evocative veneer—with the notion of what we know and think we know, or remember.

Be it my own memories or something more collective, I’m most interested in those moments we have experienced, or hope to experience, to remind us of who we are and who we will become. I’m not interested in sentimentality. But I am interested in how our histories can act as tools to inform the future we are all moving toward.” – David Wilson SOLO EXHIBITIONS 2022 From There to Here, James Baird Gallery, Pouch Cove, Newfoundland 2022 In From the Cold, Gibson Fine Art, Calgary, Alberta

Painting of Chrysler Building New York City by Contemporary British Artist Angela Wakefield
Art measures 31.5 x 31.5 inches
Frame measures 36 x 36 inches
This vibrant cityscape by Angela Wakefield captures the electric energy of New York City with cinematic intensity. Featuring the iconic Chrysler Building rising majestically in the distance, the composition pulls the viewer into a dynamic streetscape alive with glowing streetlights, bustling traffic, and the saturated hues of an evening sky.
Aesthetic Appeal:
• Color Mastery: Angela’s bold use of color creates an emotionally charged atmosphere. The deep reds, warm oranges, and luminous yellows against cool urban blues evoke a sense of both movement and warmth.
• Perspective & Depth: The central vanishing point draws the eye forward, enhancing the feeling of stepping into the painting. The architectural precision paired with expressive brushwork creates a rare balance of realism and stylized interpretation.
• Urban Romance: There’s a nostalgic, cinematic quality to the work—like a scene from a classic film. It captures not just the physicality of New York, but its energy, its pulse.
Why It’s Valuable and Investable:
• Signature Style: Wakefield’s distinctive visual language—urban realism infused with vibrant expressionism—has made her a recognized and collected artist on both sides of the Atlantic.
• Market Appeal: Cityscapes, especially those depicting iconic locations like NYC, have universal appeal. They resonate with collectors who seek both emotional connection and cultural significance.
• Proven Artist: With over two decades of success and international recognition, Angela’s work continues to appreciate in value. Her paintings are held in private and corporate collections worldwide.
• Timeless Subject: The fusion of architecture, light, and motion ensures this piece remains relevant and impactful for generations.
This painting isn’t just a beautiful addition to any space—it’s a piece of urban history told through the eye of a masterful contemporary artist.
Angela Wakefield has twice been on the front cover of ‘Art of England’ and featured in ARTnews, attracting international attention and critical acclaim with her urban landscape paintings of New York, London & the North of England. The style of painting has been described as ‘contemporary realism’, and is often favourably compared with Edward Hopper by collectors and art critics. Angela’s work is held in private collections in Europe and the USA, including the British Royal Family. Her admirers include leading figures in international business, filmmaking and the media.
