Derek Buckner is an American realist painter based in Brooklyn, New York with his wife and their two sons. Born in 1970 in New York City, Buckner grew up painting in the studio of his father, Walker Buckner, an important realist painter in Boston. Buckner is also a nephew of new-music pioneer Thomas Buckner and of children's advocate Elizabeth Buckner. His interest in the visual arts grew when he attended LaGuardia High School of Music Art and the Performing Arts where he studied stone carving. Derek went on to continue his education at Vassar College and later received his BFA at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago where he studied painting with Susanna Coffey and Dan Gustin. It was in Chicago that he developed a passion for perceptual painting. Attracted to the landscape of Mexico's West coast peninsula, Derek later moved from Chicago to Baja, where he immersed himself in painting his surroundings amidst the rare and dramatic light of where the desert and Pacific Ocean converge. Three years later, Derek returned to New York where he met his wife, the novelist Joanna Hershon. It was back in Brooklyn where he returned to painting the urban landscape, and it is the east end of Long Island where he continues his ongoing relationship with painting the land and sea. As a Brooklyn-based artist, Derek Buckner draws inspiration from the beauty within the seemingly banal settings of suburban houses and intersecting freeways. These scenes are not meant to depict particular areas of the United States but to serve as archetypal representations of American suburban sprawl. It is not only the artist's expressive, elemental brushwork that depicts vital images of the contemporary American landscape, but also his choice of subjects, which emphasize the disquiet of suburban life. In the artist’s own words: "I am attracted to American productivity – its fecundity and its excess in the 21st Century. It is also by seeing beyond our preconceived notions of place that I find splendor—whether it be tract housing glowing in the evening sun or the intertwining of concrete freeways in the heat of the day." Buckner was selected by Charlotta Kotik of the Brooklyn Museum for a juried exhibition of young painters. He has exhibited in New York, Chicago, Italy, Mexico, East Hampton, and Santa Fe. His work is in numerous private and corporate collections across the US and abroad. His shows have received favorable reviews in multiple publications, including The New Yorker, The New York Sun, The New York Times, and the Los Angeles Times.
