About the Item
The painting depicts a flood in Venice, the famous Acqua Alta, when during the sea tide, the canals overflow their banks, flooding the embankments and squares. At this time, the Venetians walk around the city in high rubber boots above the knee. We see typical Venetian houses standing close to each other, with crumbling plaster exposing the brickwork, standing in the water. The water of two canals overflowed their banks and flooded the stone pavement. Therefore, the houses are reflected above it. In the distance, a typical Venetian bridge is visible in the perspective of the canal leaving us, and the tiled roofs and upper floors are illuminated by the first rays of the morning sun.
