About the Item
The painting does not depict the tourist Venice, but its very outskirts in the area of the island of Saint Helena. The embankment is washed by the sea water of the lagoon, along which probably the last vaporetto of the night is sailing. On its deck stands a lonely figure of a man. The night embankment is illuminated by the warm light of lanterns. It also illuminates the red wall of the house, which occupies the main space of the painting. The house itself is a rather original building. In its middle are two high arches, which are the beginning of two streets going into the distance, also illuminated by lanterns. In one of the arches, there is laundry hanging. All these details, as well as the night starry sky, lit windows reflected in the water of the lagoon, dark silhouettes of branches against the sky, neon light in the vaporetto cabin - give the picture a mystical, slightly unrealistic shade.
