About the Item

Duncan McFarlane’s The Packet Sunbeam of Boston Picking Up the Liverpool in Heavy Gale is a striking maritime composition that captures the power and peril of the open sea. The painting depicts a dramatic scene of a packet ship braving the fury of a turbulent storm, its sails straining against the wind as towering waves crash against its hull. The dark, churning waters and the storm-laden sky create an atmosphere of intensity, emphasizing the bravery and skill required of sailors to navigate such treacherous conditions. In the background, another vessel, The Liverpool, is seen battling the same relentless storm, reinforcing the theme of resilience amidst nature’s overwhelming forces. McFarlane masterfully renders the textures of the roiling sea and the wind-swept rigging, immersing the viewer in the raw energy of maritime life. This painting is a prime example of 19th-century British marine art, a tradition that celebrated the age of sail and the heroic endeavors of seafarers. Influenced by Dutch maritime masters and the Romantic movement’s fascination with nature’s power, McFarlane’s work embodies both technical precision and dramatic storytelling. His ability to convey movement and atmosphere elevates The Packet Sunbeam of Boston Picking Up the Liverpool in Heavy Gale beyond mere documentation, transforming it into a testament to the indomitable spirit of sailors and the ever-present dangers of the sea. This piece stands as an enduring example of McFarlane’s contributions to maritime art, preserving the legacy of 19th-century seafaring in all its peril and majesty.

Portrait Of The Screw-Steamer Pennland In New York Harbor
Located in Jacksonville, FL
ntonio Nicolo Gasparo Jacobsen’s Portrait of the Screw-Steamer Pennland in New York Harbor captures the grandeur of maritime travel in the late 19th century. The painting depicts the Pennland, a majestic steamship, cutting through the waters of New York Harbor with billowing smoke rising from its funnel. The vessel is painted with Jacobsen’s signature precision, showcasing the intricate details of its hull, rigging, and deck structures. The serene yet powerful presence of the ship is set against a dynamic harbor scene, where smaller vessels dot the waters and the soft hues of the sky reflect on the gentle waves. Jacobsen’s expert use of perspective and lighting lends a sense of depth and realism, making the viewer feel as though they are witnessing the ship’s arrival firsthand. As one of the most prolific maritime painters of his time, Jacobsen played a crucial role in documenting the golden age of steam travel. His works, including this detailed portrait of the Pennland, not only celebrate the engineering feats of the era but also serve as historical records of significant vessels. The transition from sail to steam was a defining moment in maritime history, and Jacobsen’s meticulous paintings capture this evolution with remarkable accuracy. His contributions to the maritime art movement remain invaluable, preserving the legacy of the great ships that once traversed the world’s oceans. William Edward Norton (1843 - 1916) Ship Portrait, 1876 Oil on canvas 10 x 16 inches Signed and dated lower left Born in Boston, William Norton became a noted marine painter, stirred by his youth when he sailed on family-owned ships. He studied at the Lowell Institute in Boston, and with George Inness, and then established a studio in Boston. In the early 1870s, he went to Paris and became a student with Chevreuse and A. Vollon, and then he settled in London where he exhibited throughout the last quarter of the 19th century. His reputation there was based on his scenes of the Thames River, and ocean and coastal views. In 1901, he and his wife returned to the United States and settled in New York City. He also painted at Monhegan Island, Maine, where a treacherous ledge on the southern side of the island is named "Norton's Ledge" for him. He was a member of the Boston Art Club with whom he exhibited from 1873 to 1909. He also exhibited with the Pennsylvania Academy, the Royal Academy in London, the Paris Salon, the 1893 Chicago Exposition...

Amercan Merchant Ship in Philadelphia Harbor
By Thomas Birch
Located in Costa Mesa, CA
Thomas Birch is considered one of the earliest American Marine painters of importance both in his own time and historically, forming the foundation of what would become a great American Maritime movement in the successive years of the 19th century. Born in England, Birch started as a landscape painter but after the War of 1812 he turned to marine subjects, taking inspiration from the best of both English and Dutch maritime traditions but refining these techniques into a very recognizable style all his own. The work featured here is a classic of Birch's later period, when he focused specifically on maritime subjects, mainly the busy waterways of Philadelphia Harbor. Here we see one of those scenes- a series of ships plying their trade, all framed by the city as it sits across the Delaware River, with the tall, white spire of what is either Independence Hall or Christ Church to the left of the main vessel. The details of the city are particularly good in this painting, with the wharf building to the left and the long line of buildings all along the shore. The American Merchant Bark at the center of this painting is rendered in excellent detail, from her house flag and pennant, to her rigging and sails, and down to her deck filled with the activity of crewmembers readying the ship to head out, her gilt billet...
