About the Item

MORISOT-PONTILLON Edma (1839-1921) Landscape from Ile de France Oil on canvas signed low right Old original frame gilded with leaves Dim canvas : 54 X 65 cm Dim frame : 86 X 75 cm Certificate of authenticity Edma MORISOT (1839-1921) Edma was born in Valenciennes in 1839 into a wealthy and cultivated family. His father, Edmé Tiburce Morisot, was prefect of the department and his mother, Marie Joséphine Cornélie Thomas, was the grandniece of the famous painter Jean Honoré Fragonard. Edma has two sisters: Yves (1838-1893) painted by Edgar Degas and exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York (Mrs. Theodore Gobillard) and Berthe (1841-1895) who became one of the founders of the Impressionist movement. Edma and Berthe had as their teacher Joseph Guichard, former student of Ingres. When copying works from the Louvre Museum they met Henri Fantin-Latour and many artists, such as Edouard Manet. This is the great time of outdoor painting. Guichard then entrusted them to the care of the famous landscape painter, Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, who introduced them to Achille Oudinot. In 1864, the Morisot family rented a farm near Auvers-sur-Oise. From this stay, the two sisters shoot a few paintings that they send to the Salon. Edma, presents "Evening Effect", a river scene in the style of the Barbizon School. This first show was a success for the two sisters who then participated in the Salons of 1865, 1866, 1867 and 1868. Edma chose to abandon his artistic career in 1869 in favor of his family life. Bibliography : E.Benezit Dictionary book IX/860
