About the Item

Edmund Garvey (Kilkenny 1740-1813) A view of Bath Oil on canvas Canvas Size 20 x 28 in Framed Size 26 x 33 in Edmund Garvey (1740 – 28 May 1813) was an Irish landscape painter whose work significantly contributed to 18th-century British and Irish art. Born in Kilkenny, Ireland, Garvey initially trained under Robert Carver before undertaking further artistic studies in Rome, a city that would profoundly influence his artistic development. His early exposure to the classical traditions of landscape painting, particularly the works of Claude Lorrain and the Dutch Italianate school, shaped his stylistic approach. By 1764, Garvey had relocated to London, where he established himself within the city's burgeoning artistic community. His association with the Royal Academy was particularly significant; he exhibited at the institution regularly, and in 1770, he was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy (A.R.A.), before attaining full membership as a Royal Academician (R.A.) on 11 February 1783. Over the course of his career, he exhibited over 100 works at the Academy, solidifying his reputation as a leading landscape painter of his time. Garvey's oeuvre encompasses a wide range of subjects, including British and Irish landscapes, as well as continental views inspired by his travels. His compositions often reflect the influence of 17th-century landscape painters, employing a harmonious balance of naturalistic detail and idealized classical structure. Notable works include Waterfall in the Alps (exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1769), one of the earliest Alpine landscapes shown in Britain, as well as Distant View of Rome (c. 1783), which is part of the Royal Academy's collection. Other significant pieces include View of the Eruption of Mt. Vesuvius, May 1792 and View of the Lake of Geneva with the Effect of a Flash of Lightning, which demonstrate his interest in dramatic natural phenomena. His paintings of British and Irish locations, such as Figures in the Grounds of Hestercombe, Somerset and The Old Dee Bridge, Chester, reflect the growing 18th-century interest in the picturesque and the sublime. Garvey’s ability to depict atmospheric effects, particularly the interplay of light and weather, was a defining feature of his artistic practice. Despite his professional success in London, Garvey maintained connections with the European art scene, making a notable return to Rome in 1798. His later works continued to reflect a fusion of classical and naturalistic elements, indicative of his enduring engagement with the traditions of landscape painting. Garvey died on 28 May 1813. His legacy endures through his contributions to British and Irish landscape painting, and his works remain an important part of the collections of institutions such as the Royal Academy. His paintings not only exemplify the aesthetic values of the 18th century but also serve as important documents of the period’s evolving artistic tastes and engagement with the natural world.
