A highly desirable and romantic oil on canvas landscape study of Ludlow Castle (one of the finest medieval ruins in England) by celebrated English artist Edmund John Niemann (1813 - 1876) signed Niemann 1872 The Castle, firstly a Norman Fortress and extended over the centuries to become a fortified Royal Palace, has ensured Ludlow’s place in English history – originally built to hold back unconquered Welsh, passing through generations of the de Lacy and Mortimer families to Richard Plantagenet, Duke of York. Ludlow Castle became Crown property in 1461 and remained a royal castle for the next 350 years, during which time the Council of the Marches was formed with responsibility for the Government of Wales and the border counties. Abandoned in 1689 the castle quickly fell into ruin, described as ‘the very perfection of decay’ by Daniel Defoe. It has inspired artists for generations as a result. Niemann has used this setting to showcase his skills as an artist, namely his eye for detail, rich use of colour and also his romantic influences. Edmund John Niemann (1813–1876). Niemann was a prolific and highly successful British landscape artist working mostly in oils. He was born in London in 1813 and his father, John Diedrich Niemann, was a native of Westphalia and a member of LLoyd’s. As a young man, Edmund was employed as a clerk at there also. In 1839 he decided to leave and devote himself, choosing to settle in Buckinghamshire, and paint en plain air. He especially relished painting the scenery of the Thames and also the River Swale near Richmond in Yorkshire. Between 1844 and 1872, Niemann exhibited his works at a wide range of prestigious galleries including the Royal Academy the British Institution the Society of British Artists in Suffolk, the Royal Scottish Academy the Royal Institute, the Glasgow Institute, the Paris Salon, the Liverpool Academy of Arts and the Manchester Academy of Fine Arts . The first picture exhibited was a view "On the Thames, near Great Marlow, Bucks" – a small canvas shown at the Royal Academy in 1844. Niemanns paintings are characterised by great versatility, natural colours, and visual realism, often in the romantic artistic style of J.M.W Turner, Caspar David Friedrich and Corot. His son, Edward H. Niemann, was also a painter imitating his father's style.
