About the Item
"Catskill Mountains Landscape," by Hudson River School painter Edward Delavan Nelson (American, 1821-1871) is oil on canvas and measures 15 x 24 inches. It is signed with the artist's initials, and dated 1868 at the lower left.
A student and follower of Asher B. Durand, Nelson is a rare and highly gifted Hudson River School painter in the naturalistic mode. In fact, his works are often mistaken for and compared with those of his great teacher. They both sought out and delineated the individual character of trees within a landscape and used them for a picturesque foil.
Nelson received an honorable mention from the National Academy of Design where he exhibited from 1849-1871. He additionally exhibited at the Artist Fund Society and the Metropolitan Sanitary Fair of 1864 to benefit Civil War charities. On at least a couple of occasions, Nelson
painted the landscape foil for Arthur Fitzwilliam Tait’s animal compositions. Nelson’s serene and carefully painted "Mountain Lake," 1864 can be admired at the Century Association in New York City. Nelson took up a studio in the New York YMCA building on 23rd street alongside his fellow artist colleagues, William Hart, Alfred Bricher, David Johnson, and A.F. Tait.
