About the Item

One of a kind oil on panel by the painter Edward Hargitt, dated 1877 and titled “View of the Valley of Glencoe.” Edward Hargitt (1835–1895) was a Scottish-born painter and ornithologist. He was born in Edinburgh, studied at the Royal Scottish Academy, and was known, above all, for his landscapes. Some of his works were exhibited at the Royal Academy at Burlington House. Hargitt was a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolors from 1871 and contributed his paintings to various books, such as "Bedford Park," which celebrated the natural environments common to his time. His naturalistic works perfectly capture the magnificent Scottish landscapes and their most characteristic elements: mountains, lochs, animals, birds, flora, and more. In this case, the focus is on the valley of Glencoe, a mountainous landscape also known as "the valley of tears," one of the most striking in the country. Located in the Scottish Highlands, south of Lochaber, it features towering mountain ranges and deep glacial crevices. In the foreground, cattle roam freely; in the middle of the composition, a lake faces the imposing rocky mountain in the background. Vegetation is sparse, and the landscape is rugged, typical of the mountainous region. The colors are somber, with grays, browns, blacks, and blues. Earthy and nuanced tones. The sky rises as one of the most evocative elements of the work. The chosen moment appears to be a slightly overcast sunset, with light filtering through the clouds, creating an ethereal atmosphere. On the left side, a golden but diffused light caresses the hillside. The brushstrokes are very tight, almost imperceptible. With all this, the painter, with his absolute mastery of the technique, manages to transport the viewer to the damp and cold atmosphere of the Scottish mountains. The powerful frame that completes the work also deserves special mention. Made of carved wood, it is richly ornamented with plaster or stucco additions, such as flowers, scrolls, and rosettes, all gilded. It has a pronounced texture, with diagonal hatching patterns in certain sections. Hargitt is a prominent reference for those who appreciate landscape painting and Scotland's rich cultural heritage. This painting however depicts a sublime Scottish river landscape with a river and the mountains in the background. It is a very expansive panoramic view. A large painting in good condition and a lovely example of a 19th century Scottish landscape. Similar examples of his paintings are on display in Kelvingrove Art Gallery Glasgow and the National Gallery Scotland. Signed Joseph Farquharson. Provenance. Scottish collection. Condition. Oil on canvas. Image size is 37 inches by 27 inches, fine condition. Framed size is 44 by 34 inches, housed in a gilt gallery frame. Excellent condition. Born in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1846, Joseph Farquharson combined a long and prolific career as a painter with his inherited role as a Scottish laird. He painted in both oils and water colors. His mother, a celebrated beauty, was an Ainslie. His early days were spent in his father's house in Northumberland Street below Queen Street Gardens and later at Eaton Terrace beyond the Dean Bridge, Edinburgh and at Finzean. His father Francis was a doctor and laird of Finzean in Aberdeenshire. Joseph was educated in Edinburgh and permitted by his father to paint only on Saturdays using his father’s paint box. When Joseph reached the age of 12, Francis Farquharson bought his son his first paints he could call his own and only a year later he exhibited his first painting at the Royal Scottish Academy. His first major portrait was of ' Miss Alice...
