About the Item

The youngest brother of the painters family Verveer, Elchanon Leonardus Verveer (1813-1876), was a painter and graphic artist. He is trained as a wood engraver and starts as an illustrator of periodicals and books. Over time, he started working as an autonomous artist. He makes oil paintings, watercolors, drawings, etchings, lithographs and wood engravings. Verveer develops the so-called fishing genre. The fishermen and their activities are the subject of his works of art. He has also become known for the ca. 37 caricatures of the artists of Pulchri Studio. Elchanon Leonardus Verveer was born in The Hague in 1826. He was one of the first students of the Hague Wood Engraving School, which opened in 1840 and also studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in the 1940s. He made his debut in 1843 at the age of 17 with various wood engravings at the Exhibition of Artworks by Living Masters. Like his brothers, he would continue to regularly send work to this exhibition throughout his life. As an illustrator he makes work for the popular art magazine Kunstkronijk, various other periodicals and books by famous contemporaries such as Jacob van Lennep (1802-1868) and Johan Gram (1833-1913). Elchanon worked in Brussels and in Paris. In Paris he started making caricatures ('charges') of cafe visitors and friends. Ultimately, Elchanon's career mainly focused on painting the fisherman's life in Scheveningen. Like his older brother Salomon, Elchanon regularly participated successfully in exhibitions at home and abroad. His work has also been shown at the major World's Fairs, such as those in Paris (1867 and 1879), Vienna (1873) and Philadelphia (1876). He received prizes for various works, including his most famous painting Invaliden der zee from 1869. This was shown in both The Hague and Brussels. The painting became so popular that Elchanon made several smaller versions of it. As striking as Elchanon was able to depict the characters of the Scheveningen fishermen, the caricatures of the artists of Pulchri Studio, which he probably made between 1880 and 1899, are also striking. Many of the portrayed artists belonged to the Hague School, such as Jozef Israëls, Willem Roelofs, Paul Gabriel and the brothers Jacob and Willem Maris. The majority of his work belongs to Romanticism, but a few etchings have a very Rembrandt-esque feel with strong light and dark contrasts and loose lines. His later painting is also more impressionistic and already foreshadows what was to come during the Hague School. The painting was part of a major Dutch Art collection.
