About the Item

The present painting, Autumn mood in the garden by the female artist Elisabeth Warling (1858–1915) is a fine example of her impressionistic works. Signed "Elisabeth Warling" and with dedication text: "A monsieur O...", painted oil on canvas, laid on panel. Autumn Mood in the Garden depicts a woman in red and a hat standing by a balustrade on a terrace, gazing into a garden filled with autumnal foliage. A villa is partially visible beside the terrace. The composition combines figure and landscape in a balanced and intimate manner. The work was likely painted in France somewhere between 1875 and 1887, during the artist’s period of study and residence there. Elisabeth Warling was born in Stockholm in 1858. She studied at the Technical School in Stockholm (Tekniska skolan) from 1875 to 1877 and continued her education at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts (Kungliga Konstakademien) from 1877 to 1883. After receiving a scholarship from the Academy, she continued her studies abroad, notably at the Académie Colarossi in Paris between 1875 and 1887. Warling spent several years in France, where she was influenced by contemporary French academic painting and plein-air methods. She worked primarily in oil, gouache, watercolour, and graphite, producing genre and portrait paintings, as well as figure studies and landscapes. Her portraits, for example those of Gerda Kallstenius (1885) and Minister P.J. von Ehrenheim, were noted in her lifetime for their sensitive color sense and refined composition. Together with fellow artist Charlotte Wahlström, Warling spent several summers painting landscapes in Arild, a popular artists’ colony on the Swedish west coast. Although her reputation during her lifetime remained modest, her technical skill and color refinement have since been increasingly recognized in studies of early Swedish women artists.
