Emanuele Cappello, born in 1936 in Vittoria (Ragusa), studied at the Liceo Artistico in Palermo and Florence, and continued his training at the Académie La Grande Chaumière in Paris. Active professionally since 1954, he is listed in the Dictionnaire des peintres et sculpteurs by E. Benezit. He exhibited internationally and worked between Monte Carlo and Florence, a city where he lived for many years and is regarded by the Florentine community as a local artist. His expressionist painting is known for its strong material presence, decisive gestures, and vibrant palette.
In this view of Venice, featuring the Grand Canal and gondolas in the foreground, Cappello deviates from his usual bright and vivid palette in favor of more subdued tones—beige, ochre, and buttery hues. This rare chromatic choice in his body of work lends the painting a suspended, almost dreamlike atmosphere, while preserving the energy and dense physicality typical of his style.
Thick, sculptural brushstrokes create a dynamic and textured surface. The gondolier in the foreground brings a strong sense of movement, while the Venetian architecture in the background dissolves into light, as if seen through the lens of memory.
