About the Item

Emma Hartley My Places 1 Original Landscape Painting Oil on Canvas Size: H 30cm x W 40cm x D2cm Sold Unframed (Please note that in situ images are purely an indication of how a piece may look). My Places 1 is an original landscape painting inspired by the light between night and day. Emma Hartley creates ethereal contemporary images. She portrays the atmosphere, the light (perhaps spiritual) that the ordinary eye senses, but rarely differentiates from more representative perspectives. Her paintings (featuring landscapes, people and abstract concepts) draw the viewer into the world of feelings, emotions and instincts. This world is accessible and appealing and still gently challenging. Emma’s paintings reveal the drama and beauty of reality, through the surreal lens of emotional perception. Emma Graduated with a BA (Hons) Fine Art from Winchester School of Art and has had many solo and group shows in London and France she was nominated for the Columbia Threadneedle Prize and select for Ing Discerning Eye Prize at the Mall Galleries. Private buyers collectors from UK, New York, and France and she is followed keenly by Interior Designers.’ Emma lives and works in Hampshire and France.

"My life as a painter began in the late 1950s when abstraction was “The only game in town”. I followed and progressed through gesture, organic and finally, geometric non-objective painting. The radical move for me was to discover that the real world of landscape lurked behind all that past work. My childhood in the mountains of Pennsylvania pervaded my “way of seeing” and I wanted to investigate and celebrate the infinite variety of tone, color and composition that I found around me. Sky, the structure of trees, mist and water appeared to fill a hunger to look again and again. There was mystery and danger lurking behind the beauty, and my aim was to try to avoid the cliché and explore the infinite structure of the visual landscape. Now I use my camera as a sketchbook and search for images that seem to offer odd structure and “mystery”. I shoot multiple points of view, cull, crop, and mostly discard. The surviving photographs become the catalyst for the paintings and the process is always a mediation between memory and the small image pinned to my easel...
