1982

About the Item

Step into the world of abstract contemporary art with Joyce Weinstein's "City-Morning-Skyscape", a captivating painting from 1982 that flaunt the artist's early brilliance and creativity. Weinstein's expertly mixes between the different techniques of oil paint, wash, combined with hints of the impasto technique altogether resulting in a rich textural surface of the canvas. The thick and tactile paint create subtle forms among the hazy and diffuse areas of the canvas, skilfully drawing you into a soft morning light scenery. The color palette of "City-Morning-Skyscape" is a small symphony. From the soothing depths of douche grey to the enigmatic allure of black, and the fiery passion of red, all the way to the radiant optimism of yellow, these hues dance harmoniously on the canvas, creating an atmosphere that is at once warm and inviting. The painting is 40in(H) x 26in(W) and is framed. The painting is signed, titled, and dated on the reverse side of the canvas. Arrives ready to hang. Artist bio: Born in the vibrant metropolis of New York City in 1931, Joyce Weinstein embarked on her artistic journey with an impressive start, holding her very first solo exhibition in 1953 at the Perdalma Gallery in the heart of the city. Even at this early stage, her artistic talent and unique style were already blossoming, foreshadowing a promising artistic career that would span decades and captivate audiences worldwide. It was in the 1970s that Weinstein's art underwent a profound transformation. Her "City-Sunscapes" series, characterized by a delicate yet bold interplay of gestural strokes, captured the very essence of New York City. Through her paintings, she skillfully harnessed the dynamic relationship between light and air, employing a diverse range of techniques to evoke the vibrant energy of the urban landscape. Her ability to manipulate luminosity reflected her mastery of the medium and her unwavering commitment to pushing the boundaries of her artistic expression. In 1992, a pivotal moment in Weinstein's life arrived with her move to Ancramdale, New York, alongside her husband, the accomplished artist Stanley Boxer (1926–2000). This change of scenery provided her with fresh inspiration, as she immersed herself in the picturesque rural landscapes. Her art, once primarily focused on the bustling cityscape, now celebrated the natural world with equal fervor. Weinstein's late 20th-century work achieved a delicate balance between the physicality of the canvas itself and the emotions it conveyed. Her paintings, whether hinting at the serene countryside or presenting abstract expressions of color and form, displayed her acute sensitivity to the subtleties of nature. The geometric patterns of farm fields, the ever-changing hues of the seasons, and the dance of light and weather all found their place in her art, infusing it with a profound sense of time and place. Throughout her remarkable career, Joyce Weinstein's art rightfully found its place in the collections of esteemed institutions. These include the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Edmonton Museum in Canada, the New Jersey State Museum in Trenton, the Hines Collection in Boston, and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia. Her enduring contributions to the world of art continue to inspire and captivate audiences around the globe.

"My life as a painter began in the late 1950s when abstraction was “The only game in town”. I followed and progressed through gesture, organic and finally, geometric non-objective painting. The radical move for me was to discover that the real world of landscape lurked behind all that past work. My childhood in the mountains of Pennsylvania pervaded my “way of seeing” and I wanted to investigate and celebrate the infinite variety of tone, color and composition that I found around me. Sky, the structure of trees, mist and water appeared to fill a hunger to look again and again. There was mystery and danger lurking behind the beauty, and my aim was to try to avoid the cliché and explore the infinite structure of the visual landscape. Now I use my camera as a sketchbook and search for images that seem to offer odd structure and “mystery”. I shoot multiple points of view, cull, crop, and mostly discard. The surviving photographs become the catalyst for the paintings and the process is always a mediation between memory and the small image pinned to my easel...
