About the Item
Emma Tapley's Greenbelt is a captivating 8 x 10 inch painting that showcases the artist's signature blend of realism and impressionist techniques. Depicting a marshy winter/fall scene, the piece offers a striking view of fallen trees and their reflections in deep blues, browns, and touches of scattered white, with no visible horizon, creating a serene, almost abstract quality. Known for her larger, higher-priced works, this petite painting offers an accessible entry into Tapley's world, maintaining the "bigness" of her style. Its clean, black-painted edges eliminate the need for framing, making it a versatile and affordable masterpiece.

Emma Tapley
Emma Tapley (American, born 1967) received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the School of Visual Arts and has studied at the Pratt Institute and the New York Academy of Art. She has been exhibiting her work for 25 years, and has shown extensively both nationally and internationally. Tapley’s realist paintings of the natural world often take years to complete as she gradually builds layers of carefully placed brush strokes. What results are representations tending toward abstractions of nature viewed from unusual perspectives. She disorients and challenges the viewer with her renderings of inverted reflections in water and cropped details of larger vistas. Tapley had multiple solo exhibitions with Fischbach Gallery, New York, NY, as well as solo and group shows internationally. Tapley is the recipient of the UCross residency in Wyoming, Art Shed residency in Sointula, British Columbia; Byrdcliffe Arts Colony, NY, Vermont Studio Center, Herhusid Residency in Iceland, and the Jentel Foundation residency in Wyoming. Tapley’s dizzying paintings are gleeful acts of deception and subtle commentary on the notion of farce inherent in painting. Ranging from dutiful translations of trees, skies, and flora, to impressionistic renderings of forests, they take the tenets of landscape and turn them on their head. Tapley obfuscates or eliminates horizon lines, crops out canopies and root systems, and makes porous the boundaries between foreground, midground, and background. Without these anchors, literal tethers to the terrestrial plane, Tapley’s landscapes transcend the space of reality. Tapley allows the paintings to expose themselves as paintings, peeling back the pretense of representation to show the tricks and techniques that go into recreating reality. This quality of self-awareness adds to the levity of Tapley’s paintings, permitting them to wink as they toy with the fabric of reality.

Clearing Off, contemporary Impressionist casein landscape painting
By Alan Bray
Located in New York, NY
Alan Bray’s landscape paintings of his native, central Maine explore the ever-ebbing dynamic between nature and humanity. His paintings capture an asymmetrical pas de deux. Painted with uncompromising precision by his quick-drying casein tempera paint, Bray’s trailheads, shorelines, and vast horizons show evidence of previous human presence as it succumbs to natural growth.
Bray’s stylized scenes center on these afterimages of human interference as well as other natural phenomena. Inundated with detail, nature reclaims swaths of scarred land, fallen trees, and dilapidated structures, returning them to their wild form. Natural phenomena such as wild overgrowth, animal tracks, mysterious forms, bogs, and mist are resplendently captured as homage to the rugged and uninhabited corners of secluded Maine.
Alan Bray builds his landscapes with numerous layers of quick-drying casein tempera. Often used in Italian Renaissance painting...

The Smallest Event Unfolds Like a Fate, surrealist landscape oil painting
By Eileen Murphy
Located in New York, NY
Eileen Murphy’s paintings on panels are a mirage of disparate memories. Lived experience, borrowed art historical footnotes, and imagery drawn from literary references swirl together and coalesce into shimmering sylvan scenes. Allusions to Patinir, Jacob von Ruisdael, Frederick Church, lines pulled from Rilke, and Murphy’s own personal history emerge deftly from the same brushstroke. The result is images that are simultaneously foreign and familiar, deeply intimate yet shared in a common vernacular. Murphy builds these compositions from layers of carefully applied oil paint, her brushstrokes growing increasingly specific and nuanced with each new stratum. Because she works on panel, the pigment is not absorbed into the material, but rather, sits atop the surface, the color remaining fully saturated. Without this anchoring effect, Murphy’s landscapes become lofty and voluminous, further intensifying their surrealist quality.
Eileen Murphy has spent her life along the Hudson River and has lived in Brooklyn, NY for the last seventeen years. Her current paintings are based on the landscape of Columbia County...

Autumn Leaves II
By Carole Garland
Located in Palm Desert, CA
Creekside one can see the rocks, pebbles and leaves at the bottom of the stream or the viewer can observe the water's surface: floating bugs, bubbles, ripples and reflections, but it's difficult to catch the bottom and the surface simultaneously. However, the photographer or artist can capture the stream's surface and pebble strewn bottom at once. Carole Garland set this as her goal in this painting from her "Reflection" series.
Carole Garland graduated from Knox College, Galesburg, Ill., and studied art at the Art Institute of Chicago and the University of the Americas in Mexico City. Outdoor workshops with plein air painters Frank Serrano...
