Emmanuel Bellini
Large French Post Impressionist Oil on Canvas, The Port of Cannes at Crépuscule

1950s

About the Item

Large French Post Impressionist oil on canvas view of the Port of Cannes in the South of France by Moroccan Monegasque painter Emmanuel Bellini. The painting is signed bottom left and resigned, titled and with a large exhibition number to the rear of the canvas. Presented in carved wood and gilt frame. Provenance: From a private French Collection. A charming and atmospheric view of the Port of Cannes on the Mediterranean coast in the South of France at crépuscule. Two figures, bottom left, look at the small masted boats in the port. In the distance the towering buildings and citadel of the old town of Cannes dominate the scene with their stone walls and terracotta roofs. Bellini has cleverly used touches of red, the coat of one of the figures, the prow of a ship, café awnings on the harbour quay to move our eye about the painting and to give the whole composition a lift. The impasto technique used for the sky and the handling of the reflections in the harbour water also animate the whole painting. The whole scene is suffused with the warming yellow light of crépuscule as the sun is setting. Emmanuel Bellini was born in Monaco. After schooling at the Brothers' school, he was a student in 1919 at the École de dessin du Rocher (since renamed the École supérieure d'arts plastiques de la ville de Monaco) where his teacher, Professor Colombo, taught him three dimensional drawing with charcoal and watercolour painting. He graduated in 1922 and then joined the firm of the architect Charles Dalmas, who would design the Palais de la Méditerranée in Nice, among other things. At the same time he created humorous and caricatured drawings, which he signed "Mène" (the nickname given to him at the time within his family), for the regional press. He established himself as an architect in Sainte-Maxime (Var) and then in Cannes in 1929. He later decided to return to painting encouraged in this by Cyril Constantin. In 1949, he exhibited in Cannes in the hall of the Grosso company. The painters Louis Pastour and Jean-Gabriel Domergue showered him with praise. His oils and numerous watercolours have intense colours whose tones have accents of Fauvism and Impressionism. Bellini was inspired by many subjects during his fifty years career. His career in architecture gave him an understanding of buildings which were a frequent subject, as in our paintings, as well as horse and carriages, clowns, the circus, flowers, domes, Venice, Cannes, Paris, Nantes, Monaco, the French Revolution, Eugenio Lucas Velázquez, the dreamlike landscapes, and many others, many set in the Belle Époque. For his 80th birthday, Prince Rainier of Monaco offered him an exhibition at the Sporting d'Hiver. It was an opportunity to present a series on the Circus, a shared passion of the painter and the Prince, as well as a variation on Velázquez. His works are held in private and public collections worldwide.

By Frank Docherty
Located in Cotignac, FR
Large surrealist contemporary oil on canvas by Scottish artist Frank McLean Docherty R.S.W, signed and dated bottom left and signed and titled 'She brought Colour into his Life' to the reverse. This piece whilst wonderfully colourful, playful and erotic is typical of the witty sense of humour this artist displays in all his work. Docherty likes to tease us visually and asks questions and presents conundrums to the viewer. Frank McLean Docherty was born in Glasgow , Scotland in 1942. He became a student at Glasgow School of Art in 1960 and graduated from the Department of Printed Textiles in 1964. He taught in a secondary school in the East End of Glasgow for two years, thereafter departing to work in Dublin in the Republic of Ireland as a textile designer (Marks & Spencer, Heals and Liberty of London). He was also an illustrator for a range of newspapers and an Art Director of magazines. In 1973, he was appointed Principal Teacher of Art in a Scottish High School and in 1978 was honoured by the Queen when he was appointed Member of the Royal Society of Painters in Watercolours (R.S.W.) He left education in 1994. Since that time he has developed a vision which is quite unique in Scottish Art. Bank Managers, toucans, lighthouses, penguins, bowler hats, Frank Docherty...

Mid-Century Oil on Canvas. Harbour scene. 'Farewell to the Fishermen'..
Located in Cotignac, FR
Mid 20th century oil on canvas of a crowded harbour scene, showing the local fisherman or sailors saying farewell to their families before going to sea. The painting is signed bottom right but the artist remains as yet unidentified. A colourful yet slightly brooding and dreamlike painting. The figures are faceless and the shapes loose and undefined reminiscent of the works by Balthus who in turn was influenced by LS Lowry and his scenes of industrial districts. The colours are deep and glowing and the shapes of the figures are rounded giving a sense of warmth and evoking the quality of light seen at either dawn or dusk. Balthasar Klossowski de Rola (February 29, 1908 – February 18, 2001), known as Balthus, was a Polish-French modern artist. He is known for his erotically charged images of pubescent girls, but also for the refined, dreamlike quality of his imagery. Lowry is famous for painting scenes of life in the industrial districts of North West England in the mid-20th century. He developed a distinctive style of painting and is best known for his urban landscapes peopled with human figures often referred to as "matchstick men".
