About the Item
As an artist, I have devoted myself to the investigation of contemporary notions of place. My personal artistic research not only addresses how we, as humans, culturally connect to the landscapes that surround us, it also focuses on the complexities of that connection in a world where the environment is loved and abused simultaneously.
Although I do create in the studio, my work would not exist without spending a significant amount of time working in the field. Wandering about the deserts and mountains of the western United States, my understanding of the world as a cultural being fuses with a direct interaction with place. I make studies and drawings. I take GPS points. I notice the way I look at landscape is influenced by my intellect, my politics, my history. All of this physical and mental information is brought back into the studio where it is elaborated on with the help of scientists, government workers, cartographers and historians. The pieces that result incorporate topographic maps, tree ring data, art historical references, personal site research and digital media with the sensibilities of representational painting and drawing. By doing so, I have attempted to create a larger body of work that is as multifaceted as the land that I study.

"By using references to navigational coastal profiling and by borrowing and subverting compositional structures of the 19th century American landscape painters I examine how modern landscapes came to be spatially constructed. Through a combination of on-site field studies and larger studio pieces I make bodies of work that reflect the individual characteristics of a specific place while retaining a critical awareness of the landscape genre. This practice, while fully absorbed into the cliché of modern landscape painting, is not innocuous. It is rooted in a history of globalism and environmental dominance. Through my work I explore this spatial language at times allowing individual works to teeter into abstraction.
