Ernest HUBER Vienna, 1895 – Vienna, 1960 Oil on wood panel 25 x 34 cm (31 x 44 cm with frame) Signed lower left “E. HUBER” Inscription on the back “Jerusalem / Mount of Olives / Mosque of ..ar” Ernst Huber is an Austrian painter who was part of the group of artists of the “Art Show” era in the 1920s. In 1920 he was present at a major exhibition in Vienna alongside works by Andersen, Bockl, Faistauer, Kokoschka, Kolig and Wiegele. Huber then joined the Viennese Secession as a member and participated in its exhibitions in Vienna and abroad. In 1937 he won the Austrian State Prize and an honorary prize awarded by the city of Vienna. In 1952 his works were presented for the first time in a major collective exhibition at the Maison de la Sécession. Austrian art historian and museum curator Bruno Grimschitz writes about his work: "his animated landscapes of figures are moving and detailed depictions, imaginative and revealing, small colorful pictures where nature is faithfully reproduced, painted with warmth, real humanity. The natural appearance was the most personal thing in Huber's art. The painter never sought extraordinary situations, never bizarre or unusual situations. The natural aspect is found in all his compositions. Huber painted tranquil landscapes with solitary houses, a small path, chapels, small villages, the fields of Lower Austria, but also the Alpine valleys of Salzburg (Huber lived in Wagrein and Salzburg, from 1942 to 1957) . After the landscapes of Upper Austria. Huber undertook larger undertakings with his travels to Germany, Italy and Spain, the Balkans and Turkey. Huber went to Tunisia for the first time in 1928. In 1951, he crossed the ocean and went to North America. Then to the Middle East. This is how the strange and the exotic appeared in Huber's work. The brightness of the south brightened its colors. The palette is enriched with blue, yellow and red in his North African landscapes from the oasis. And the atmospheric light became more and more poetic. »
