About the Item

Winter Landscape at Dusk Oil on panel, signed Ernst Lindgren. The painting depicts a winter landscape in the late afternoon and the setting sun. Snow-covered trees frame a small creek and its icy waters. The low winter sun creates a golden reflection in the water and a luminous glow that spreads across the white snow and bathes the scene in warmth contrasting with the cool tones of the scene. Ernst Lindgren was born in Delsbo, northern Sweden, in 1887 and died in 1948. He began his training as a painter’s apprentice in Hudiksvall, later studying in Stockholm and in Dresden, Germany, before continuing his artistic education in Paris at the Académie Scandinave, also called Académie or Maison Watteau. After returning to Sweden, he settled in Arbrå in north Sweden, where he mainly painted landscapes, though he also produced a number of portraits. Lindgren exhibited his works both regionally and nationally. He is represented in public collections, including the Örebro County Museum. The Académie Scandinave, often referred to as Maison Watteau, was a Scandinavian art school and gathering place in Paris that operated from about 1919 to 1935. It was located in Montparnasse at Maison Watteau, a building rented by Lena Börjeson from 1922 as a venue for exhibitions of Scandinavian art. Börjeson founded and chaired the academy, which served as a hub for Scandinavian artists—particularly from Sweden, Norway, and Denmark—providing a place to study, exhibit, and exchange ideas. Lena Börjeson acted as director, and among the artists connected with the school were Otte Sköld, Henrik Sørensen, Adam Fischer, and Per Krohg. The Académie attracted a number of Scandinavian students, including the Danish sculptor Astrid Noack, and offered instruction in painting and sculpture alongside organizing exhibitions of Nordic art in Paris. The school remained active until around 1935, after which several of its teachers and students returned to Scandinavia. Their experiences in Paris contributed to the development of new art schools in Sweden, such as Pernby’s painting school established by Otte Sköld, and Lena Börjeson’s own sculpture school.

Arthur Percy – Winter Landscape with Snow-Covered Trees and River
Located in Stockholm, SE
This intimate oil painting presents a stylized winter landscape rendered in soft pastel tones. Snow-covered trees stand in tranquil silence along the banks of a frozen river, their forms reflected faintly in the ice. In the foreground, a small wooden boat lies moored at the river’s edge, contributing to the scene’s serene, contemplative mood. Percy’s delicate handling of light and color – a pale sunlit sky against subtle blues and violets of snow imbues the work with a poetic calm. The atmosphere and decorative simplification of the composition are strongly reminiscent of Gustaf Fjaestad’s celebrated Nordic winter scenes, capturing what contemporaries described as the silent, majestic beauty of Swedish winters with an almost mystical tranquility. In its quiet harmony and refined palette, the painting echoes Fjaestad’s approach to portraying winter “ruled by a pure and quiet spirit,” while remaining distinctly Percy’s own vision of nature’s repose. Arthur Percy was a Swedish painter and designer whose artistic development bridged academic training and modernist influences. He studied at the Konstnärsförbundets (Artists’ Association) school in Stockholm under prominent artists Richard Bergh and Eugène Jansson...
