About the Item
This evocative seascape by Francis Draper Jr. depicts the austere and rugged coastline of Labrador. A rocky formation dominates the horizon, rendered in earthy browns and deep shadows, while the sea churns below, its spray captured in energetic touches of white and blue. The restrained palette and textured handling of the sky evoke the cool, raw atmosphere of the North Atlantic, while the intimate square format (9 x 9 inches) underscores the immediacy of the artist’s vision.
Painted circa 1885, the work reflects both Draper’s early training in Boston and his engagement with the broader 19th-century Romantic landscape tradition, in which nature was depicted as sublime, remote, and untamed. The choice of Labrador as subject matter was unusual, offering a striking alternative to the more familiar coastal imagery of New England. In this sense, Draper’s painting aligns with the exploratory spirit of American artists of the period, who sought out landscapes beyond the settled and picturesque.
Francis Draper Jr. was born in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1861. He studied at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and established himself as a painter of landscapes and coastal views. Draper was a member of the Boston Art Club and remained active in Massachusetts—particularly in Wakefield—before relocating to Santa Barbara, California, in 1915. He lived there until his death in 1935. His work, though relatively scarce, bridges East Coast academic training with a lifelong fascination for the sea and landscape subjects.
While Draper’s oeuvre remains less documented than those of his contemporaries, his paintings reflect a sensitivity to both atmospheric nuance and the structural presence of natural forms. This Coast of Labrador canvas demonstrates the artist’s awareness of American marine painters such as William Trost Richards and John Frederick Kensett, whose depictions of the Atlantic coast balanced observation with poetic mood. Unlike the monumental canvases of the Hudson River School, Draper’s work here suggests the intimacy of a cabinet picture or painter’s sketch, an immediate, personal encounter with the wild northern coast.
This painting is not only an early example of Draper’s coastal imagery but also a rare 19th-century American artistic record of Labrador, situating him within the larger narrative of maritime and landscape painting in the post-Hudson River School era.

View AllConrad Martens, Charles Darwin in the Beagle’s Tender, Patagonia, Argentina wc
Located in Rancho Santa Fe, CA
PROVENANCE: Christie’s South Kensington, England, June 10, 1986; Maynards Auction, Vancouver, Canada, December 6, 1994.
This 19th cent wc depicts Charles Darwin in the Beagle’s Tender, Coastal Patagonia, Argentina.
The son of an English mother and the Austrian Consul General in London, Conrad Martens pursued a career in painting following his father’s death in 1816. From the age of sixteen he studied under landscape watercolourist Copley Fielding, absorbing the traditions of the English watercolour school and Joshua Reynolds’ theories on painting. In 1833 Martens joined the HMS Beagle on a scientific survey expedition at Montevideo, South America, as ship’s artist, replacing the ailing Augustus Earle. He befriended the ship’s naturalist, Charles Darwin, whose empirical observation of landscape forms and climatic conditions would influence Martens’ practice.
Martens left the Beagle in Valparaiso in 1834 and travelled to Australia via New Zealand and Tahiti, settling in Sydney in 1835 and setting up a studio in Pitt Street. Patronised by the colonial elite, he fulfilled many commissions for watercolours of the local landscape and Sydney Harbour, including Elizabeth Bay c1838, which features the grand neoclassical edifice of Elizabeth Bay House, built for the former colonial secretary...

Westchiloff is an American-Russian artist. He was born in Russia in 1877, and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg; as an artist he traveled extensively in Europe and in the USA. He finally settled in New England, where he died in 1945.
He is probably best-known for seascapes (particularly of the New England coastline), but was also well regarded for his landscapes, portraits and figures, and genre subjects.
His work, especially after his travels in Europe and then in America, is closest to Impressionist in style. His favored medium was oil, which was well suited to his confident and strong technique. This in turn imbued his paintings of the rugged landscapes and seascapes of New England...

Edgar Alwin Payne was an American painter known for his landscapes, seascapes and western paintings.
He was born in Washburn, Missouri on March 1, 1882, and began painting at the age of 14. He began his career by designing and painting scenery for the stage, and murals for homes and theaters. Primarily a self taught artist, he did though study briefly at the Art Institute in Chicago.
Recognized as one of California's leading landscape artists, Payne earned the respect of his peers and art critics for his Impressionistic landscapes painted in the plein-air style. Possessing a reverence for nature, he especially loved the mountains. Frequently he took pack horses in the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range to the upper lakes to sketch and paint, there he glorified the areas majestic peaks and cobalt blue lakes. Payne Lake was named in his memory.
Drawn to Europe, Payne trekked to and painted the elevated heights of the Swiss Alps, the colorful fishing boats of Concarneau Harbor and Brittany, France and the picturesque sailing vessels of Chioggia, Venice, Italy. He spent time capturing on canvas Arizona's Canyon De Chelly and Navajo horsemen traversing the region's arid tablelands. He painted California...
