The Port of Hull
Oil on canvas
Image size: 22 inches x 35 inches
Size including frame: 27.25 inches x 40.25 inches
Provenance: Stacy-Marks
A wonderful seascape painting of the Port of Hull by Francis Moltino. The scene shows the Port of Hull from the Humber with the tower of Hull Minster rising above in the centre. The distinctive factory chimneys of areas such as Wilmington can also be seen in the distance. At the time, Hull was an important port and had an array of different vessels pass through, from sailing ships to small fishing boats which Moltino has depicted in the painting.
Francis or Frank Moltino was a marine painter born in Milan, Italy around 1818. By the early 1840’s, he had moved to England where he married and had several children. One of his daughters, Frances Moltino, also became an artist. The family initially lived in the Tower Hamlet area of London before moving to 5 Little Russell Street, from where he began exhibiting at the Royal Academy in 1848. Works at the RA include ‘Early Morning – Waiting for the Tide’, ‘View of the Thames’, ‘ Battersea Old Mill’, and ‘Morning on Burgh Flats’.
As well as painting views of the Thames he also travelled around the coast of England. Later on, he visited Venice and produced a number of works of the famous city, returning to England by 1880, where he lived at 13 Rush Hill Terrace, Lavender Hill, Battersea. He died at 31 Fitzwilliam-road, Clapham on 15 April 1888.
Moltino’s works have a continental feel and with his brushwork and pastel coloured palette, his style is often compared with Turner. Many of his subjects featured busy harbour views such as this fine example. Examples of his paintings can be found at the Guildhall Art Gallery and the Cooper Gallery, Barnsley.
Presentation: The painting is housed in its original period gilt frame which is in excellent condition. The back of the painting bears a Stacy-Marks gallery stock label from the 1960’s, who at the time were based at 120-122 Terminus Road, Eastbourne.
Condition: As with all of our original antique oil paintings, this work is offered in ready to hang gallery condition, having been professionally cleaned, restored and revarnished.

Francis Moltino
Francis Moltino was an Italian painter, resident in London, who specialized in landscapes and coastal scenes. His work is similar to that of Turner in style but with an air of southern Europe. Moltino exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts in London between 1848–55. He was resident in Covent Garden and then Pimlico in London from the mid-1840s. In later life, Moltino returned to Italy and painted in Venice, where he might originally have come from.

Exhibition Size Painting
A fantastic exhibition sized landscape painting of sheep on a cliff top by the coast by Charles ‘Sheep’ Jones. At the time he produced this painting, Jones was living at Heathercroft, Balham Hill in London. Given the size and quality of the work it was most likely an exhibition piece. The topography and landscape suggest that this is the Dorset coast, one of his favourite places to paint.
Charles Jones was an animal painter who was born in Stepney, London in 1836. He was the son of the artist Samuel John Egbert Jones (1797-1861) and Dinah Jones. He lived with his parents and 9 siblings in Mile End and was a pupil of his father. In September 1859, he married Frances Rosalinda Downe, who was born in America. His son Arthur Bertram Loud (1863-1930) also became an artist. They lived at 12 Hayes Place, Lisson Grove from where he made his debut in London at the Royal Academy in 1861. He also exhibited at the British Institution, Suffolk Street, New Watercolour Society, Royal Institute of Oil Painters and the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours.
By 1867, he had become a successful artist and they had moved to 7 Paragon Place, Brixton Hill. From 1874 he lived at Heathercroft, Balham Hill where he spent the rest of his life. Jones became well known for specialising in paintings of sheep, cattle and deer in landscape settings. He spent his time travelling around visiting areas such as Devon, Dorset, Kent, Sussex and the Highlands. However, it is for his skilful painting of sheep that he is perhaps best known, and for which earned him the nickname of ‘Sheep’ Jones.
As well as the major London galleries, he also exhibited provincially at various locations including: the Royal Cambrian Academy where he was elected a member in 1886, the Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts, Manchester City Art Gallery, Royal Hibernian Academy, Royal Society of British Artists, Birmingham and the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool. Some of the smaller more intimate galleries he exhibited at were Arthur Tooth & Sons and Thomas...
