About the Item

This piece is a meditation on the randomness of sides. In games, sports, debates or wars, the side you’re on can be a result of things that we’re never in your control. In this piece suicide bomber bees fly down from a flower, eyeballs on stems are concerned about a fallen comrade, little blue men try to escape the battlefield, and a mountain smiles blindly knowing that the Earth will survive and recover. Trees explode and clouds become levels in a video game. And there’s a pull string dangling if you’d rather pull a shade down on the whole thing. Original work, signed by artist. ARTIST BIO Born and raised in Clifton, NJ, currently living and working in Brooklyn, NY. Rick has always been an artist, however, it’s important to note that he began his working career as a creative director for a worldwide advertising agency headquartered in New York City. He helped bring the internationally recognized M&M’s characters to life in the commercial world - he created “Orange” the insecure M&M with an identity crisis. He won many industry awards, including an Emmy for his creative work for HBO. But later, at an advertising industry event at the Society of Illustrators, a group of prominent artists were shown Rick’s sketchbooks and convinced him to focus on fine art. At a young age Rick was copying the art he saw in newspaper comic strips, the books of Dr. Seuss and the surrealistic works of Salvador Dali. He had always used sketchbooks as a form of self-care, therapy and intention-setting. They are journals that lock in on specific emotions and moments. Now, he uses his art as a platform to inspire communication about meditation and to raise awareness about healing and manifesting self-confidence through creativity, imagination and play. He creates intricate drawings, paintings and collages that visually combine the aesthetics of calligraphy, cloud forms and animation. His surrealistic body of work explores the notion of creativity itself and the use of imagination as a powerful tool. Rick received a BFA in Visual Communications from the University of Delaware in 1988. ARTIST STATEMENT For over two decades, my work has explored how human beings are prone to stress over the unknown, while the releasing of expectations creates humility and equanimity. A playful brew of decorative papers set in a quilted cloudscape, these collages are dreamlike looks at how pointed focus in a complex panorama influences an awareness of the material world. The cloud people and drifting clouds that tend to camouflage them are meant to inspire the changes in perspectives and the welcoming of new possibilities. With a bent toward calligraphy, these mixed media pieces rely on the cloud for its dynamism. In the words of Chinese artist and scholar Zhang Yanyuan (c.815-c.875), the most critical of all brushstrokes was “a cloud stretching for a thousand miles.” As a result, artists of the time were urged to move their wrists with a swing, “as rising clouds over a great mountain.” My current series “CUMULUS HUMILIS” is inspired by a society-wide thirst for mental calmness, composure and evenness of temper during a collectively difficult year.

The result is both surreal and solemn, an ode to nature’s memory and the enduring presence of the inanimate. 👤 About the Artist Antoni Pitxot i Soler (born in Figueres, 1934 – died in Barcelona, 2015) was a Catalan painter deeply rooted in the surrealist tradition. Coming from an artistic family —his uncle was Ramon Pichot, a friend of Picasso and Dalí— Pitxot trained as a draughtsman and painter from a young age. In the 1960s, he settled in Cadaqués, where he developed his distinct artistic universe. His paintings revolve around stone as a symbol of permanence, transformation, and memory. Pitxot created sculptural assemblages from real coastal stones and later immortalized them in oil on canvas. His works often hint at human figures, ancient myths, and allegories of time. 🎭 Connection with Salvador Dalí Pitxot was not only a close friend of Salvador Dalí but also one of his closest collaborators.
