About the Item

Signed lower right, "Frank Sherwin" (English, 1896 - 1986), titled lower left " A Street in Winchester" and painted circa 1950. A delicate watercolor view of the medieval rectory of Winchester, in the English county of Hampshire, showing figures and a horse-drawn cart in Broad Street. Sherwin first studied at Derby School of Art and, from 1920, at the Heatherley School of Fine Art in Chelsea, London. A master of light, he specialized in watercolor landscapes which he exhibited widely and with success. Sherwin's work was widely popularized in the 1930's through his illustrations of picturesque British destinations for a succession of Railway travel posters.
